I have just been reading about the crackdown on overstayers. The law is going to be enforced, if its been lax for so long it seems to me that it would be only fair to say from the 1st of January 2011, until then sort yourself out its 20,000 bts and an additional 5000 bts for every broder trip you should have made.

But what about the traffice laws? Just leave them alone shall we? Today have seen 4 policemen riding around without helmets and hundreds more civilians, how many are suppossed to be on a motorcycle 2.3 or4?

Using the telephone whilst in charge of a vehicle? Baby in one hand/arm whilst in control of a motorcycle. Riding the wrong way down a one way street. Riding through a market on a motorcycle. What are those white stripes on the road, is that where motorists mow down pedestrians? How about licence checks.

The law is the law and should be respected by all, but, the authorities and the general public flowt it all the time, what is the point of having a law if no can be bothered to respect or enforce it? Someone need to grasp this and sort it out not just pick on a few foreigners who make a contribution to the economy and have now been targeted. The outside world probably think its agood job someone is clamping down, the next thought then has to be why were they not doing their job in the first place, how high a standing does the law have in thailand?

The law needs to be seen to be working and fair to all, work in progress then and a long way to go and that point there was total silence and tomorrows a new day and whats changed?

Today have seen 4 policemen riding around without helmets

They are exempt from wearing them.

Section 122 of the Land Traffic Act States BE: 2522 states:

The rider and the passenger of a motorcycle shall wear a motorcycle helmet.

The proivison under this Section is not for monks, novices, ascetics, persons of other religions which require wearing of a turban, or any persons under Ministerial Regulation.

Would that mean all government employees? or is there a specific regulation?

Dunno mate, I havent got a full copy of the act, nor can I be jacked trying to find one.

This particular act of parliment is 31 years old & a fairly basic one at that. Section 4 deals with 40 different defintions but there is none offered for that.

it's a strange one.

I wonder if it means on an escort or some such thing. I don't think it can be for all government employees, it must mean on a specific order.

I would think that most countries would treat illegal immigration with a lot more attention than traffic offences...

Try to stay in Australia illegally see what happens...

You might be surprised.

For instance, drive around just about anywhere in Australia @ high speed or in a dangerous manner & theres a very good chance one of the lovely state HWP Police will deal with you very efficiently.

There are quite a few people abusing the Australian immigration laws as well, but as a percentage the figures are considered quite low.

The new directive from Immigration Minister Chris Evans' office was issued to immigration officers verbally last week.

There are almost 50,000 visa overstayers living illegally in Australia.

More than one in 10 is from China.

Entrants from the US, Malaysia and Britain are also big overstayers.

Most come in on tourist visas, but about 3600 are foreign students who disappear into the community when their course is over.

Theres a number of courses of action Boater. One of them is that once someone OVERSTAYS more than 28 days, they are flagged & not allowed to re-enter within 3 years.

That would be a good one here for LOS, certainly keep some from farting in church.
