Thai queen admitted to hospital

BANGKOK, October 1, 2010 (AFP) - Thailand's 78-year-old queen has been admitted to hospital in Bangkok, where she was visited Friday by her husband King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who has himself been hospitalised for the past year.

Queen Sirikit was taken to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital late Thursday, an official at the facility said, asking not to be named.

"She has been admitted to Chulalongkorn Hospital since 11:00 pm (1600 GMT) last night," the person said.

The queen's condition was unclear. There was no comment from the Royal Household Bureau.

King Bhumibol, who is the world's longest-reigning monarch and considered a demi-god by many Thais, was seen arriving at the hospital Friday evening in a wheelchair with royal aides, as hospital staff knelt and bowed in respect.

The king was admitted to Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital in September 2009 for treatment of a respiratory condition, although he has appeared in public several times since.

He married Queen Sirikit, a distant cousin and ambassador's daughter, in 1950, the same year as his coronation.

The only monarch that the vast majority of Thais have ever known, the king continues to command immense affection and respect among his subjects.

The king has no official political role but is seen as a unifying figure in a country that is frequently riven by political unrest, including mass opposition protests this year that turned deadly.

He remained largely silent during the recent political crisis, which triggered a series of street clashes between armed troops and anti-government "Red Shirt" protesters that left 91 people dead in April and May.

I wish Her Majesty the Queen a speedy recovery and wish His Majesty may recover from what ails him. My parents were born in 1927 and still in reasonable health. I know what it means to have them around. Chokdee

This really, really makes me very sad.

Not long ago I was watching some early color films of the young king and queen traveling through Thailand. And the queen was sooo beautiful and so full of life, running ahead of everyone. Laughing!

And now...? At least we know she will get the best of care there is to find.

Speedy recovery my queen!

Thai queen recovering in hospital after heart problem

BANGKOK, October 2, 2010 (AFP) - The Thai palace said Saturday that the kingdom's 78-year-old queen was recovering after being admitted to a Bangkok hospital with a heart problem.

Queen Sirikit was taken to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital late Thursday with "symptoms of an irregular heart beat", according to a statement from the Royal Household Bureau.

She continues to be monitored in the hospital, where she was visited on Friday by her husband King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who has himself been hospitalised for the past year.

"A team of royal physicians treated her with high frequency radio waves and her heart beat returned to normal in the Friday night of October 1," the palace said.

Bhumibol, who is the world's longest-reigning monarch and considered a demi-god by many Thais, was seen arriving at the hospital in a wheelchair with royal aides, as hospital staff knelt and bowed in respect.

The couple's daughter Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has visited and Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva also arrived to pay his respects by signing a book of well wishes on Saturday.

The king was admitted to Bangkok's Siriraj Hospital in September 2009 for treatment for a respiratory condition, although he has appeared in public several times since.

Bhumibol is seen as a unifying figure in a country riven by political unrest, although he remained largely silent during April and May's anti-government "Red Shirt" protests that left 91 people dead.
