Berry pickers cheated of wages

About 160 Thai berry-pickers have been tricked out of their pay.

The owner of the berry company have disappeared with the company's cash. 4.2 million Swedish kronor (~20 million Baht) missing for picking salaries and taxes.

" - It is of course devastated. It is only to find that it works in this way in this business", says Åsele Mayor Bert-Rune Dahlberg to P 4 Västerbotten.

" - It's too dam_n. There are 160 families who had their lives ruined", says the interpreter Thomas Hass to Västerbotten Courier.

In two months, the Thai people picked berries for the company Lomsjö berries. They've only got 6000 Swedish kronor (~29000 Baht) each in salary. The rest of the money disappeared when the boss emptied its accounts of millions and disappeared.

This happens almost every year.

This year it has been Chinese, Vietnamese and Thais.

The Swedish authorities and unions doesn't seem to stop it.

In Finland the employers must deposit the minimum wage and ticket money at the government.

was always curious about the finnish setup... lots of thais here have asked me about that; and a finnish guy here had mentioned this to anon several times; always seemed to good to be true although getting the money straight to the bankaccounts leaves less room for 'scamming'...

Thai berry pickers who arrived Monday morning from Sweden were received in the airport by Thailand's Minister of Social Development and Human Security, Mr Issara Somchai.
