I'm 32 and was born in Singapore to a Thai citizen Mother and American Citizen father. I am American citizen in other words.

We have been living in the US for 25 years. My parents now have decided that they will be retiring to Bangkok soon.

My question is.. can i live there with them? Even if my mom is Thai citizen and i'm her daughter.... will i be allowed to live there with them?

Also i have two small boys 5 and 1 years old, both american citizens as well can they come with me too?

I hate to see my parents go so far away.... my father is 66 years old with Parkinson and I want to be close to them.

Please help me with this question. Thank you so much,

Sunisa

How about you calling the Thai Embassy & Consulate in D.C. regarding getting yourself a Thai passport. Since your mother is Thai, you should be eligible for a Thai passport. You might also call the "honorary" Thai consulate in Houston and ask them, but since they're "honorary" don't believe they'll be able to handle, other than hopefully answering your questions.

Your two kids? Looks like they are U.S. citizens, so would require U.S. passports for travel to Thailand. Hmmmm, but if YOU are Thai (after you get a Thai passport) perhaps they'd also be eligible for one. Another Q for you to ask about. Schooling for the boys? Something to consider, local schools, bi-lingual, "international?" Lots of options, lots of prices!

Your father will need a Thai visa prior to travel, preferably a Non-O based on marriage to a Thai. Then he should be able to extend this year-by-year at Thai Immigration based on marriage.

Reckon you'll have some more suggestions here, I'm just up early, a bit jet lagged having just come in from the U.S.

Hi,

I am British and my wife is Thai. We have a 9-year old daughter who has a British Passport.

Just last week we went down to the Royal Thai Embassy in London and applied for her Thai Birth Registration and a Thai Passport.

The Certificate and Passport will be with us in 4-6 weeks. Both parents had to be at the appointment.

The process was very easy but we had a 3-month wait for the appointment at the Embassy.

I see no reason why this same process can't apply to yourself. Once you have your Thai Passport the same would apply to your children. You may even be able to it all at the same time but you would have to check on that.

All the relevant application forms, along with example forms were available for download from the Embassy's website.

Good luck.

32 years ago believe the laws were different so should be taken up with Embassy. Question if her mother ever lost her Thai nationality?

As non-Thai; children could obtain visas for study and she could obtain to take care of them with 500k in bank account.

Laws changed in 1992 and essentially re-instated any rights which one may have lost previously.

I didn't get my Thai birth certificate and first Thai passport till nearly 2 decades after I was born.

Given the OP was born in Singapore, I suspect she'd first have to apply for her Thai birth certificate via the Thai embassy in Singapore, given that is where she was born. No other embassy would have the juristiction to issue it. She should be able to do it by post.

With the Thai birth certificate in hand, she should be able to apply for a Thai passport in the US, and for Thai birth certificates and Passports for her children.

As stated, you and your children are Thai. Under current Thai nationality law a child is a Thai national if one of the parents is Thai at the moment of birth of the child.

Well born in Singapore... i have only birth certificate from there. Its has on there my father and he's American and my mom isThai.

Not sure about this... Thai birth certificate.... I can get one ? Im confused....

My parents already know what they have to do for themselves when they move there. My father did all the paperwork and even had to get background check ect ect...

Only thing left would be me and my 2 boys :/

My mom is still Thai citizen. She gets her passport done every time she visits Bangkok.

If im able to live there.... do i have to have 400,000 in bank for just myself? or is that for something else...? i think i better call Thai embassy first thing in the morning....

You need to present your birth certificate to the Royal Thai Embassy in Singapore to obtain there report of birth abroad (that is US term but suspect Thai name is similar - it is then your Thai birth certificate). Then you can enter your name on home register/get Thai ID card and passport. Your children would follow the same process at the Thai Embassy where they are born. Everyone ends up with dual nationality and no need for visas to stay in either country.

You are Thai, and once you have the birth certificate you can proof that. As a Thai you always have the right to enter and stay in Thailand and you don't need a visa or extensions of stay. But you have to enter on the Thai passport.

Contact the Thai embassy in Singapore about how to apply for the Thai birth certificate, you will need your parents cooperation for that.

don't worry, it is a bit confusing. It works like this:

If you are born ourside your home country, the country you are born in will issue you a local birth certificate (this is what you already have).

For Thai nationals born outside of Thailand, they ALSO need to get their Thai birth certificate done. Given you were born in Singapore, ONLY the Thai emabassy in Singapore has the juristiction to issue a Thai birth certificate to a Thai citizen born on Singaporean terriory. It can not, repeat, can not be done elsewhere. Which is why the Thai embassy in Singapore should be your first stop.

Once you have had the Thai birth certificate issued, you should be able to present this to the Thai embassy in DC for them to issue your Thai passport.

Your children (if born in the US) will also be able to have their Thai birth certificates and passports issued.

Once you have this, you can enter Thaialnd and stay indefinetly.
