Drug smuggling Iranian arrested at Suvarnabhumi carrying 3 kilos of ‘ice’

BANGKOK, Oct 8 – An Iranian man was arrested at Suvarnabhumi Airport for smuggling three kilogrammes of crystal methamphetamine also known as ‘ice,’ worth nearly Bt10.5 million (US$350,000) into the kingdom, a senior Thai customs officer said on Friday.

Saeid Golestani, 25 year-old Iranian national, was apprehended at the arrival terminal of Thailand’s main international airport Thursday evening, according to Wisan Wuthisaksilp, Principle Advisor on Development of Customs Control System.

When Mr Golestani was passing through the terminal, customs officers asked him to stop to inspect his baggage check as well as a microwave oven which he carried, bypassing an X-ray scanner.

A scan test found a package of crystal meth in a plastic bag with a total weight of three kilos hidden inside the microwave oven, Mr Wisan explained.

The illicit drug was valued at $350,000.

Initial investigation found the suspect flew from the Syrian capital of Damascus via the United Arab Emirates’s Abu Dhabi to Thailand.

Initially, Mr Golestani was sent to the Narcotics Suppression Bureau for further investigation.

In the first seven days of October, the customs department has registered two cases of ‘ice’ smuggling at the main international airport totaling about 5.65kg worth about Bt19.8 million (some $658,000).

From October 1, 2009 to September 30, 2010, the Customs Department made arrests in 109 cases of all kinds of drug smuggling, worth nearly Bt730 million ($24.3 million).

Seventy of the cases were 'ice' smuggling with a total weight of over 128 kg valued at more than Bt450 million (over $15 million) in value. (MCOT online news)

Maybe there's more to it than meets the eye. After all, you'd think the this kind of news would have filtered through to the general Iranian public by now.

We've now had a steady succession of Iranians being arrested for supposedly smuggling large quantities of illegal drugs into Thailand, yet despite the publicity, it continues to happen. It's almost as if the poor guys who get caught for this offence don't actually know anything about it.

So maybe it has more to do with Iran eliminating its dissidents by getting them locked up, or put to death even, in Thailand. "Here you mate, nice new microwave oven to take with you on vacation". "They don't have microwaves in Thailand, so you're going to need it". Whoever plants these gifts on them omits to inform them what the unit contains.

It isn't only Thailand that face a raise of drug smuggling Iranians, that happen also in other countries. And these arrests are in the news in Iran and these drug problems are handled by the Iranian police forces in a similar fashion like everywhere else in the world where drug use and drug dealing is illegal.
