Stronger Thai baht affects economy

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The baht appreciation will affect the economic growth by up to 2.7 percent. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance has predicted that that US Dollar might get weaker, and urged entrepreneurs to be ready to cope with it.

According to The Fiscal Policy Ofiice (FPO) Finance Minister Korn Chatikavanij said that stability of the nation’s economy is partly influenced by inflation. The higher the inflation rate, the more the people and businesses will be affected. Thailand has been so used to low inflation rates in the past ten year that it does not realize the true effect of inflation.

As for MR. Pridiyathorn Devakula’s suggestion that the government impose a “Tobin tax” as a means to curb capital inflows, the Minister said the government was ready to listen to suggestions from all parties and would discuss them with the Central Bank. As for the 15% tax imposed on capital gains and interests earned from government and pubic enterprises’ bonds, Korn said the measure was effective given the amount of purchases had decreased. He also advised that entrepreneurs increase their production efficiency as he believed the greenback would depreciate further against the baht and other regional currencies.

As regards the concept of “Tobin tax”, which is aimed at reducing or removing the incentive for short-term financial speculation in the currency markets and allowing authorities to control capital flows, Naris Chaiyasoot, the Director of Fiscal Policy Office (FPO), said the Office was studying it; however, whether the concept will be applied depends on the top-level-management’s decision.

The appreciation of the baht, to the tune of 10% during the past nine months, has affected the country’s economic growth by 2.7 percent, which, in turn, might cause the GDP to grow less than 7%, as earlier expected.

Wirat ready to explain video clip scandal

BANGKOK (NNT) -- The Democrat Party MP who appeared on the video footage negotiating with a Constitutional Court official said he could explain everything on the clip, and that the talk was not in connection with the Democrat’s fund misuse case.

Democrat Party MP for Ranong Wirat Romyen flatly denied lobbying the court official. He said he was not worried about the libel law suit filed by the Pheu Thai Party against the Democrats.

The Democrat MP admitted that he had met Pasit Sakdanarong, the then secretary to the president of the Constitutional Court, who was dismissed from his post after the clip had been released. Mr Wirat did not say how many times they had met, but said he would wait for the belligerent Pheu Thai Party to make a move. He added the meeting was personal; his party did not send him there.

The scandalous clip was released on Sunday, one day before the last witness cross-examination day in the Democrat Party dissolution case. The ruling party has been accused of breaching the Political Party Act by misusing a political party development fund worth 29 million baht provided by the EC.

Meanwhile, the ABAC Poll by Assumption University stated that 54 percent of the respondents thought that the video footage has tarnished the credibility of the justice system.

House Speaker Denies Quitting

Thai politics may soon be in a state of confusion again, following rumors on a secret deal concerning the top post at the House of Representatives.

However, the present speaker of the Lower House has come out to deny the rumors.

House Speaker Chai Chidchob affirmed he has never made any deal with the ruling Democrat Party that he will give up his post if the Bhum Jai Thai Party leaves the coalition.

It was reported that Chai agreed on a deal to pave the way for former Democrat leader Banyat Bantadtan, who was once nominated to for the House speaker post when the now defunct People Power Party took office in 2009.

Key Bhum Jai Thai Party member and Transport Minister Sophon Sarum and Deputy Government Spokesman Supachai Jaisamut denied commenting on the issue.

There have also been rumors on a possible change at the Interior Ministry, which suggested that former deputy prime minister Suthep Thaugsuban would take over the minister’s post from Chawarat Charnvirakul, who is also the leader of the Bhum Jai Thai Party.

Supachai said he had no knowledge of such a change.
