Can I Walk Around With A Beer In Bkk?

Recommended Posts

I occasionaly see people doing this, but I wondered what the "rule" is. Can I walk around town with an open beer bottle? If not, walking - can I sit on a bench or on a stoop and drink a beer from a bottle? I've got a great people watching stoop I want to use and enjoy a beer while doing it! :)

It amazes me people will decide whether or not to do things like this depending upon the legality. Whatever the law is in Thailand just don't sit on a park bench getting pissed.

Some people have no manners at all.

I have never wondered about the rights and wrongs of enjoying sitting on a park bench, enjoying a beer whilst people watching, but I have often wondered why when people ask a simple question on this forum some people feel the need to respond with insults.

I can tell you why I asked....

1) I want to obey the law of the country I'm living in.

2) I know in my hometown in the US, open beer bottles are not allowed and, since I am not familair with Thai law, I wanted to know.

geeshhh...

The reason this pisses me off so much is related to a family day out at Brighton beach a few years ago. A group of knobheads sat behind us pulled out a few beers smoking spliffs and taking pills while all around them families are trying to enjoy a day at he beach. <deleted>.

I'm afraid its left me with a very low tolerance for this kind of thing. Keep beer inside (or outside) a bar thanks.

You said you have seen others do it, well just join the group.

It is very illegal to do here as in most cities... carries a 2000baht fine or 3 days in a cell.... also the same for Not wearing a shirt in the street.... but this is Bangkok and most police do not know common laws ...

It's legal don't worry about it, you can walk anywhere with a beer in the street. I'm also American and it was a bit of a shock when I first went overseas and realized that basically everywhere else allows this.

Serious? Is there a reward? I'll turn in a good percentage of the men around here, making sure I put a shirt on first.

Take your shirt off while your at it, wear shorts and then you'll look like a complete arshole.:whistling:

Seems I still need to make a LOT of inane post before reaching 6K+ posts like you :bah:

When I see somebody walking (wearing or not wearing a shirt) drinking a beer or other kind of alcohol, I feel disgusted.

When I see someone walking down the street drinking a beer I too feel disgusted and i am compelled to pull my trusty bible and book of conservative morality and values from my backpack and begin to lecture the offender on the error of his (or her) ways. Perhaps not too unsurprisingly many Thai folk who I've tried this with have given me a black eye or two.

Well said that man! 6000+ in less than a year.

Get outside and exercise (maybe even take your shirt off)

It might not be illegal, or the police might not enforce some little law about it, but it is poor manners.

In Bangkok, many of the parks are definitely no alcohol and no smoking. Signs everywhere in them, and the security guys will definitely enforce it.

All university campuses in Thailand are alcohol free, at least by law.

Forget the legal bit. Just some life-style guidelines should help you here.

If you do not do it at home, why do it here?

Thais are basically shy, polite people. So.....

No public displays of affection.

Wear your best clean clothes at all times.

Always be polite and respect others.

Do not drink alcohol or be seen to be drunk in public.

Do not take drugs.

Most people (not just Thais) will respect you more if you were to follow these simple steps. B) It's not rocket science is it?

I suspect that you would not go into your local Wallmart without a shirt on and swigging a beer.

That's one of the things I like about Vegas. You can walk all over town with an open beer. No big deal. Just don't get behind the wheel though! :(

But you can drive your car like you're the only person who's on the road and if there's a queue in 7-11 just walk straight to the front!

Free yourself from the clamour towards the lowest common denominator.....of course it exists in Thailand same as anywhere else.

Based upon his joining date, you would not to make over 16 posts every single day of the year. You've probably got better things to do!

Your points are right on. Except the Walmart one. Some really crazy people frequent that store. I saw a guy with a goat try to get in!!!

Smokie36 is right on. Some farangs come over here and lose their sense of right and wrong...or maybe they never had it. The worst drivers I see are the hi-so Thai's in their BMWs...and farangs acting like them also...

This is a recent phenomenon, goats are being spotted in stores all around the US

Their eyes make them kinda scary. One guy did bring his into the bank as I was walking out. Had it on a leash. I was so much in shock I just stood there with my mouth open. I wouldn't even bring a dog into the bank...crazy...

It must be terrible for you, having to face humanity everyday. To think that some people might actually feel like a drink sometime, what utter scum.

What about water, I often carry a small bottle of water around with me in the afternoon heat and take the occasional sip from the bottle as I slowly dehydrate. Is that ok or would I too be disgusting in this scenario ?

Legal or not should really not matter if you are paying attention to the Thai people or should I say the people of the country that you are visiting. If they are not walking around with a beer in their hand (and they are not)does that not tell you something?OK lets say it is not illegal to do but as you can see the people of the country that you are visiting are not doing it.Why do it?I really see no differance walking with a beer or water or soda or whatever but many people do look down on it.So why?To prove a point or what? This would be one of the things that I see as "allowing" Thai people to have another item to say "look at the farang being a sh_t"

Most Thai people never see westerners except when they are here as two week millionaires.Alittle off the topic but...............Think about it.

Is it legal or not ?I really do not know, but what I do know is that I will try my best to fit in with the country that I am living in at the time. The best way to do that is to observe what the local population is doing. And as th OP has done is to ask.
