Drug Lord's Jail Term Halved to 20 Years

The Appeals Court has halved the jail term for a notorious Klong Toei drug lord to twenty years for money laundering.

The Appeals Court today released the appellate verdict on a lawsuit filed by the Office of the Attorney General against three defendants.

The three, Siam Sapworrasit, or Supap Sidaeng, dubbed Pap 70 Rai, his wife Sayamon Sirithanathorn and her sister Duangta Kanjanaharn, were convicted of violating of the anti money laundering law.

Public prosecutors accused the three of concealing and laundering assets they had earned from narcotics sales between August 19, 1999 and March 20, 2003.

The total value of those assets was estimated at 200 million to 500 million baht.

The Appeals Court found Supap guilty of violating the narcotics law and concealing the origin of his money generated from criminal activities by transferring cash totaling 43 million baht to his own bank account.

He then withdrew the amount to purchase gold ornaments, accessories and amulets.

The court, however, acquitted him of other charges as several pieces of evidence could not prove his guilt.

The court, therefore, halved the preliminary court 's 40-year jail sentence to 20 years for his guilt on 10 counts of money laundering.

Sayamon, his wife, got her sentence reduced to 10 years from 20 years, his sister in law Duangta's jail term was reduced from 12 to four years.
