ljerams
I have just acquired a hand Coffee Grinder. I know that I can buy Dao Coffee Beans at Foodlands Super Market but would like to have a bigger choice. Does anybody know another Supermarket or specialist Shop that has a bigger selection for sale including if possible coffee beans from Vietnam, Indonesia and South America? Also any recommendations on which to try?

NanaFoods
I have been ordering Lom Haun coffee via mail from Coffee Bar 99 (my wife orders, actually). Really good coffee. The 100% Arabica is 400-baht/kilo. Grown in the South, so I'm told. We just do an ATM xfer, and its here in a few days. Might need a translator, but here is the product listing: http://www.coffeebar99.com/index.asp?catid=1&contentID=10000004&getarticle=30&title=%C5%C1%CB%C7%B9 Contact info here:

May I correct you as to location so that other people don't get confused. Crystal Design Centre is not on Navamin Road it is on the Ramintra - Ekamai Road. Drive into the CDC and down the road at the rear for about 100 metres. And then ask Security. They have a selection of coffee beans but the price is around Baht 2,000/kilo

Roota
I think Lao Mountain Coffee has a better quality then Dao, Shinounk or some other Lao brand names, Agreed, the best Lao coffee I've found. I've bought it in Vientiane but is it available in Thailand? For really excellent coffee beans in a more European style, the new Dean & Deluca is hard to beat. Next to Chong Nonsi BTS. sabaijai
Many coffee critics say Doi Chaang is best. I've seen it in Villa supermarkets in Bangkok. There is also a kiosk in the Phrom Phong BTS station.
NanaFoods
Although I hate to support the corporate entity Starbucks has some dam_n good beans Indeed I must say they have good beans and are nicely roasted. But IMO their prices are out of touch with reality. Some of the local coffees mentioned here are equally as good, or quite close. You may not find as big a variety of types of roasts or origins as you would at Starbucks, but at half the price or less, who cares? I tend to prefer and stick with a medium roast - not a fan of dark French roast or espresso, nor light roast. Several of the local brands offer a medium roast. The darker the roast, the less caffeine, in general, as roasting longer will break down more of the molecule. Espresso has a strong kick to it because it's made more concentrated. For my personal preference, I find a medium roast still has a nice roast flavor while remaining smooth and not bitter, and still provides a good kick. negreanu
I truly think Starbucks Beans are the best available in Thailand. Don't forget the Coffee Passport from them so you get 1 free pack of beans every so often which brings the cost down a little. Yet to find better beans that Starbucks and tried many many here. atyclb
Ratica Coffee Soi Lat Prao 1 The street behind Union Mall (across street from Central Lat Prao) MRT Phahyothin station http://www.ratika.com/ walk about 7 minutes and shop is on right hand side. They sell beans about 180 bat/500 grams. arabica thai and some blends. a lot of nice espresso machines and supplies also ==================================================================================================== Mr. Chatree is an expert roaster. He roasts blends and also a most excellent ethiopian single bean, not bitter without sugar. about 300 bat per 250 grams is less than price in USA. Well worth a visit as he is a scientist and usually pulls multiple shots for you to sample prior to choosing. Chatree is a very nice person that has studied coffee roasting in different countries. atyclb
Forgot to mention; Espresso roast is a bit of a misnomer. Outside of europe, especially italy, many believe espresso roast beans need to be very roasted = black/dark. This is not true since essentially all of the roasted in italy (espresso) beans are not over-roasted but would be considered french roast. Starbucks is famous for over-roasting beans = bitter burnt taste. Forgot to mention Danube Coffee (Ploenchit Centre) has quite nice espresso and beans from Indonesia, a bit pricy. Ratsima
We've been buying Kaho Thalu coffee from Chumphon. I tasted it at an OTOP fair here in Korat. I liked it and bought a 500 gram bag of dark roasted beans for 150 baht. It was so good that we ordered five more bags. Ordering is a bit of a hassle. You have to call, do a bank transfer and then wait for delivery by truck. Their web page is here: Kaho Thalu Coffee Their phone number is: 0-7762-0009, mobile: 086-4303807 It's good stuff and you can't beat the price. Mighty Mouse
Have you thought about roasting your own green beans? Building a home roaster is part of the fun. Plenty of information about these on-line. If you are using the beans in an espresso machine, you need fresh beans....not more than one week out of the roaster. Most supermarket bought beans are too old to provide good crema and taste. With home roasting you can be assured of the very freshest of fresh beans. I have no plans for an espresso machine or roasting beans because I'm not a big cofffee drinker. I am trying to narrow down my choice between Lanna Hill tribe beans, Brazil Santos if I can find a supplier other than Foodlands which may have stale beans, any other recommended beans from central South America and something suggested at Ratika. Their Ethiopian beans have been recommended in an earlier thread.I went there today but regretfully they were closed I shall return as their Web site shows loads of equipment including a milk frother which I have been trying to locate for some months. . ljerams
I have now contacted K. Chartree at Peabody's and he has come up with four very interesting suggestions based upon my desire to find a coffee bean similar to Brazil Santos. They are all priced at Baht 375 per 250 grams. He replied very quickly giving a nice description for each one. I look forward to my visit and to taste some! :jap:
