Down Load From Garmin Disc To Garmin Nuvi 205W

Featured Replies

I have just got the Nuvi 205W I have set the language to American/English but the map is in thai, how Do I down load the English version from the supplied Garmin disc, not very good at this sort of thing.

I recommend having a Garmin dealer install the English language map file for you. Where did you buy the Nuvi 205W?

If you have to do the job yourself, directions should be on the CD:

1. Connect the Nuvi 205W to your computer using a USB cable. Garmin will show up as a drive such as "E".

2. Expand the Garmin drive, open the Garmin folder and locate to map file. It will be named either gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img.

3. Load the CD to computer, open the English Language Map folder. The map file therein should be name either gmapsupp.img or gmapprom.img.

4. Copy the English Language Map file from the CD and paste onto the 205W internal memory to replace existing map file located per step #2 above..

I bought from Tesco so unit was boxed untill I got home, that sounds like something I could bugger up so will take to shop tomorow for them to do, man said will do for 400 bht peace of mind as I am not to good at doing things like that on comp, thanks for the info..

Good reason to purchase GPS from an authorized dealer, as opposed to a retailer, who offers free service. Most of the retailers only stock the Thai map version of the Garmin GPS.

didn't want to create a new thread but somewhat related

I just recently purchased a downloadable map from the Garmin website.

All went well with the download, as per instructions:

Tools, settings, map, info- I saw the following which would indicate the downloaded map was successful:

CN North America NT 2011.20 (cityXplorer Toronto)

Thailand StreeMap v10.1 NT (English) - Exits

Thailand StreetMap v10.1 NT (English)

All 3 maps werë "checkëd" so I unchecked the 2 Thailand maps in the hopes that the Toronto Map would be the default map but I still don't see the Toronto map.

G:/Drive (microSD card) still shows empty

F:/Drive (Garmin folders) I can't locate the Toronto Map

What Am I doing wrong to access this new donwloaded Toronto map??

Thx

Correction to above post:

F:/Drive (Garmin folders) I can now see the NEW MAP Folder containing the new Toronto map files (.IMG)

Since, I am in Thailand, can I still check to see if this Toronto map is working properly or do I physically have to be in Toronto for this map to work. Any way to test this Toronto map while in Thailand??

[Tools>Settings>Map>Map Info] Your Toronto map is recognized as a valid map so no problem there. The GPS initializes with the last known position, which is in Thailand. So until you can get a position fix in Toronto your GPS won't display that map.Turn the GPS Mode "off" and manually enter the GPS coordinates of someplace in Toronto and see what happens. Method works for me to display Singapore map from within Thailand.

Turn the GPS Mode "off" and  manually enter the GPS coordinates of someplace in Toronto and see what happens.

To continue with the simulation setup, the "Set Loc" or "Loc" option needs to be selected after the location is displayed on the map. Also, an alternative method to specifying the location to simulate other than entering the coordinates is by panning the map to the preferred location, and then selecting the location by placing the pointer on it. Having a world base map is particularly helpful in this situation.

Many thanks to InterestedObserver & dvpro, your instructions worked like a charm.

I inputted the coordinates to the CN Tower, Toronto, then "Set Location", then inputted my friend's home street address and did a simulated drive. One thing I noticed is the large amount of POI's in downtown Toronto basically blocking the view of the street map!!

Also found this neat GPS converter site which can convert Google GPS coordinates into the required Garmin coordinate formats:

Adjust "Map Detail" or zoom out (-) to get rid of the POI clutter.

You can input Google GPS coordinates directly into your Garmin. Simply change the Garmin coordinate format to suit your needs.
