Taliban briefly capture Afghan district

2010-11-01 23:03:22 GMT+7 (ICT)

GHAZNI, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- A group of insurgent gunmen stormed into the local administration of a remote district in the eastern region of Afghanistan on Sunday evening, but officials on Monday said they had taken back control of the area.

The militants raided the administrative offices in Khogyani district of Ghazni province, setting them and vehicles on fire as they overran the district after the local police chief and several officers were forced to surrender.

Zabiullah Mujahid, Talipan spokesperson, claimed responsibility of the attack, saying they were able to take control of the district with no resistance. However, the overrunning lasted only a few hours after NATO and Afghan forces were able to recapture the district.

Provincial governor Musa Khan Akbarzada on Monday spoke with the press, saying that security forces had regained control as they were already stationed in the district.

Khogyani is a rural district, but it is located in the strategic Ghazni province which runs between the Afghan capital, Kabul, and the most important city in the country's southern region, Kandahar.
