Rice Prices Expected to Rise after Floods

Rice prices are expected to increase after the recent flood crisis has sharply reduced output from two main exporters, namely Thailand and Vietnam.

Commerce Ministry Permanent Secretary Yanyong Puangrat stated that he has instructed the Internal Trade Department, the External Trade Department, the Public Warehouse Organization and the Marketing Organization for Farmer, to quickly explore the extent of damages at their respective warehouses hit by the deluge.

Yanyong said initial inspection found that 120,000 sacks of rice in the government's stockpile have been ravaged by the widespread flooding.

He expected a more complete evaluation of the damage to be known by next week.

The Commerce Ministry permanent secretary noted he received reports from the Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry that this year's floods have devastated over 6.9 million rai of paddy fields.

He said farmers were previously expected to produce 22 to 24 million tons of paddy after the harvest of in season rice but the floods have caused a drop by two to three million tons.

Yanyong added the lower output may result in higher prices of rice as Vietnam, another major rice exporter, is also suffering from floods.

Boonjong should leave Cabinet to run for MP seat

By The Nation

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva implied yesterday that Deputy Interior Minister Boonjong Wongtrairat should quit the Cabinet before contesting for the MP seat he had to give up after being disqualified by the Constitution Court for unconstitutional shareholding.

Abhisit said he had spoken to Boonjong earlier yesterday at a function organised by the ministries of Interior and Education, and had been told that the Bhum Jai Thai Party had not decided whether it would field him in the by-election.

When asked whether it was proper for Boonjong to contest the election while he was still in the Cabinet, the prime minister responded, "We already showed what should be done," noting that Suthep Thaugsuban resigned as deputy prime minister before contesting the Surat Thani by-election.

"The same political standards should apply," Abhisit said.

Meanwhile, Boonjong's fellow Bhum Jai Thai member MP Prajak Klaewklaharn said the coalition party was considering endorsing Boonjong's wife Kanchana for the Nakhon Ratchasima by-election.

"Kanchana is an option to avoid controversy surrounding her husband Boonjong," Prajak said.

Bhum Jai Thai is scheduled to meet next Tuesday to make a decision about whom it will field in the upcoming by-elections in six constituencies where MPs have been disqualified.

He said the party had designated Boonjong to spearhead the campaign for the general elections next year, so it did not want to subject him to any controversy at this juncture.

Boonjong was disqualified from his House seat on grounds of violating the ban on possessing shares linked to state concessions. Critics have called for his departure from the Cabinet before contesting the by-election on the grounds of fairness.
