Uk Settlement - Tax Etc

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

My pregnant girlfriend has recently obtained a Fiancee Visa and is here with me now.

My question is, once we get married will I be able to add her to my tax code so that my allowance doubles while she isn't working?

What other rights does she have once we are married?

Thanks

Your wife will get her own personal tax allowance but this cannot be transferred to you. The married persons allowance was abolished some time ago. There is a very small group entitled to it.

Who can claim Married Couple’s Allowance?

If you were married before 5 December 2005

If you are married and living together and at least one spouse was born before 6 April 1935, the husband can claim Married Couple’s Allowance. We reduce your tax bill by 10 per cent of the Married Couple’s Allowance to which you're entitled. The actual amount depends on the husband's income.

If one of you dies, or if you divorce or separate, you'll get Married Couple’s Allowance for the whole of that tax year.

Remember that once you are married you will be able to make a joint claim for tax credits and once the child is born you, but not your wife, will be able to claim child benefit.
