Alternative Media Amplifies

Featured Replies

The number of individuals worldwide who acknowledge that there is a hidden hand shaping world events is growing at a faster rate than ever before.

This is directly due to the burgeoning power of the alternative media and the declining influence of the establishment media. Mainstream media has been caught so many times colluding with government in order to sell major domestic and foreign policy initiatives on a foundation of lies. People are voting with their feet and turning away from the mainstream and seeking the truth.

The alternative media is by no means perfect, we make mistakes just as the mainstream does. The difference is that the alternative media actively attempts to tell the truth rather than actively attempting to hide it or misdirect the reader. Furthermore, when we make a mistake we also make the retraction clear, rather than burying it in small type on page 27.

The consistent reports of reducing newspaper subscribers is mirrored on the Internet, as alternative news websites begin to surpass big city newspapers in readership.

Using the Alexa web rankings as a benchmark, we compared a number of popular alternative websites to big city newspaper websites. The results are very encouraging.

The Alexa system has several different filters for measuring traffic to a particular site but the base number appears at the top of the page for every website URL. The lower the number, the more visitors the website gets. For example, Yahoo.com is number one.

I don't think the number of hits on a web site reflects on its quality at all. A web site like The Sun probably gets a gazillion hits because every page is full of tits & ass. The same goes for any site that focuses on titillating subjects like, for example, UFOs or conspiracy theories.

For me, the problem with the mainstream media is that it's dumbing itself down to attract more readers and advertisers. Every paper is full of rapists, paedophiles, serial killers, Michael Jackson's trial, Tom Cruise's girlfriend, Brad Pitt's divorce, on and on, ad nauseam. But the real news stories aren't that deep and tend to reflect the flavour of the month. "McJournalism," one Thai commentator called it.

It's great that there are more alternative sources for news on the Internet now, but until they develop a solid reputation I don't see that it's any easier to trust them for accuracy and integrity than the mainstream media.

I have a web site (on a fairly arcane subject) that's been around for several years and when I check who's linking to it I sometimes find people citing it as a source in their essay, thesis or whatever. They have no idea where I got my information from yet they cite it as an authoritative source simple because it is well-known!

Good summary, Camerata. I agree.

Of course, the problem with growing a good reputation is how it sets the wheels spinning faster and faster, and it is very easy for a person, organisation or business with previously small funds to fall into the trap of selling out truth and integrity for a few (or rather millions of) more bucks...

Well, one positive aspect of the so-called 'alternative media' over MSM is the demise of such ilk as Dan Rather.

Dan Rather you may recall, was the CBS News Anchor 'widely respected' until he attempted to foist a fabricated report on Dubya during the last presidential election.

I can hear the howls now but no matter what y'all think of the man, "a fake, but accurate" report on a presidential candidate ain't right. :o

The other point of course is the general leftward slant of MSM. Folks are starting to realize they've been spoon-fed an agenda-driven media for too long. :D

p.s. cheers to my buddy Tornado for this thread! :D

What Media Bias?

Mainstream media continues their full-court press to destroy America’s support for the Iraq War, and it could hardly be more blatant than in this AP article: Parents of Fallen Marine Make Plea to Bush.

The Ohio couple have long opposed the war and tried to dissuade their son from joining the Marines, but have made their views public only since his death. On Tuesday they urged Americans to voice their opposition to the war.

“We want to point out that 30 people have died since our son. Are people listening?” Palmer asked.

More than 1,800 U.S. servicemen and women have been killed in the war.

On Monday, dozens of people, including several holding large American flags, lined the streets leading to the funeral for Schroeder, known to friends and family as “Augie” based on his middle name, August.

“Yesterday, it was Augie’s day and we didn’t want to intrude upon his day with politics,” Palmer said. “We have to move on and keep his spirit alive by helping to protect his buddies who are still out there.”

The couple applauded Cindy Sheehan, the mother of a fallen soldier who has camped out in protest near Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas, for bringing the war to the public’s attention.

“We consider her the Rosa Parks of the new movement opposing the Iraq war,” Palmer said.

On posterboards, Schroeder displayed photos of his son — being cradled the day he was born; a blond boy eating corn on the cob; and the last photo the couple received of him, smiling in uniform, holding a Pepsi can and a rifle.

Their son went to Iraq filled with optimism about the mission but gradually became disillusioned with the war’s progress, his parents said.

“He said the longer it went on the less and less worth it seemed,” Palmer said. “They’re not doing the job right now. It’s not the fault of the troops. It’s the fault of the plan.”

Britain's Unseen Race Riots

Melanie Phillips writes about the rioting in Birmingham last weekend, in which Muslim and black youths battled in the streets and at least two were killed—as the Lamestream media ignored the story: Britain’s unseen race riots.

"If this had been white on black violence, there would have been a media feeding frenzy and the newspapers would have been full of reconstructions, analysis and instant opinions and recriminations. Instead, there has been near silence. The reason is obvious. The cult of multiculturalism holds that all minorities are victims of the majority, and therefore minorities must always be blameless. When two minorities start beating each other up, therefore, politically correct Britain is paralyzed. By definition, it cannot divide up the actors in the drama into good guys and bad guys. There can be no minority bad guys. It dare not investigate what actually happened, who started it and who was to blame because no minority can ever be blamed without incurring the dreaded labels of ‘racism’ and ‘prejudice’. Furthermore, the fact that Pakistanis were involved adds a further radioactive dimension. For Pakistani, read ‘Muslim’ —and that’s a road down which the media’s finest refuse to travel, for fear of what they might be forced to discover and the consequences for them that might follow."

Is there a Darfur section of Birmingham? :o

It is good to see an article that challenges the use of stereotypes as a way to see the world. I'm wondering, however, how many people superficially accept the fact that stereotyping is wrong in theory but still get carried away with it during an emotional political discussion.

It is white racism to assume that the white man invented racism.

Racism has been endemic in Africa for centuries before colonization. It has not been unheard of in the Far East.

In the Middle East, in modern times it flourishes as it always did in ancient times.

Ask any Iranian what he thinks about the Arab.

Or a Japanese what he thinks of a Korean.

Alternative sources of information from the internet aren't always wrong altho should be taken with a grain of salt as anyone with an agenda can post whatever they want.

As seen on Bedlam :o

Intifada Comes to Denmark

Mainstream media isn’t only ignoring and/or distorting the Muslim rioting in Paris suburbs—Viking Observer points out that Muslims enraged by the newspaper Jyllands-Posten have been rioting in Denmark for at least four days: War in France, War in Denmark. :o

At least with alternative websites, there is not the money incentive that governs big players.

I quite like the lefty mag (from the body shop)

Especially for anti-bush stuff

Big bang, dark matter, black holes, time/space dilations - all are also a conspiracy of ignorance. new ideas used to percolate through the science world. Now anything but the party line is quashed, as with Evolution/intellingent design, or with relativity vs other cosmic models

good science welcomes the inquiring mind.

Madrid Bomber Nabbed in Pakistan

Barcepundit reports that one of the perpetrators of the 3/11 Madrid bombings has been arrested in Pakistan—after hiding in Venezuela.

Mainstream media seems uninterested. :o
