California man thrown out of San Diego airport for refusing full-body scan, pat down

2010-11-16 01:12:58 GMT+7 (ICT)

SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) -- An Oceanside, California man on Saturday morning was thrown out of the San Diego International Airport after he refused a full-body scan and threatened a security guard with getting him arrested.

John Tyner, 31, a software programmer was about to fly to South Dakota with his father-in-law from Lindbergh Field on Saturday morning until a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officer directed him toward one of the recently installed full-body scanners.

Tyner declined to walk through the controversial body scanners as he did not like them for a number of reasons, ranging from health concerns to a huge invasion of privacy. While he was arguing with the security guards, Tyner recorded audio and video using his cell phone.

Tyner refused to submit to a body scan and opted instead for the basic pat down but then declined being submitted to a groin check. At that moment he told the TSA agent, "You touch my junk and I'm going to have you arrested," which caused a supervisor to be called.

According to TSA at the time the controversial body scanners were installed, travelers would have the option to request walking through the traditional metal detector but that option would be accompanied by a traditional pat down. However, Tyner was targeted for a second check due to unknown reasons.

Tyner decided not to fly and requested a refund for his American Airlines ticket which was complied to his amazement as the ticket was non-refundable. TSA agents ordered him not to leave the security area as he could be subject to a civil suit and a $10,000 fine.

After a while, the California man was allowed to leave. He wrote his experiences on a blog and posted the video recorded on the incident. By Saturday evening, 70,000 people had accessed the entry and over 500 comments were posted.

People wrote down similar experiences and denounced their resentment towards the current way the airport security is conducted. Many people voiced their opinion that the TSA is ineffective and their efforts to detect terrorists are senseless.

I see that a few of the pilots unions are advising their members to refuse to use the full body scanners due to health fears. I have to ask though just why are these clowns making the pilots go through scanners ? <deleted>!!!! I would think that a pilot that was intent on causing the plane to crash would not need to take anything on board to do this. I think that this is all there just to keep us all scared and very little to do with any actual safety.

Air traffic control is vital for the safety of passengers. This service is NOT put out to tender and the contract given to the company that puts in the cheapest tender and then employs unskilled, uneducated people on the minimum wage. Unlike security at our airports ! When they start treating the security at airports the same as air traffic control I will believe it is about the safety of passengers.

Well of course it is....

By the mere use of the word TERRORIST they can remove your rights.

Then to really make you sick they name the act of removing your rights the Patriot act

But if you mention it you will be labeled many things...liberal....loony...terrorist supporter.

Yet anyone can see what you say is so simple & true

Thank goodness Thaivisa has dropped that rule that all threads must be related to Thailand. It really closed a lot of doors for potentially interesting information or discussions.

I agree that people should refuse to use these body scanners, and like Mr. Tyner, they should do so for a number of reasons, with gross invasion of privacy and health concerns topping the list.

I'm not scared by those propaganda stories of terrorism. I believe it's becoming quite clear that the true terrorists are working in key government offices around the world. If people don't start to fight back and regain their freedom very soon, it will be too late.

You are more likely to be injured by slipping in the bath than by a terrorist attack.

Q: How come they don't spend large amounts of money making baths safer?

A: It doesn't give the government more control over its population.

There is a reason that someone came up with,"Better safe than sorry". I rather put up with a little inconvenience than getting blown up by some nut's unmentionables.

How does it make you safe?

They "naked" scan you, or if you don't want that they genital grope you. They take away your water and nail clippers and your tooth paste. So far so good? Well, then they let Fedex or DHL or whatever courier company load into the baggage hold of a passenger aircraft, a package that has NOT been scanned, sniffed, inspected and the consignor does not have to submit to any kind of check to get it sent. Oh! and packages that made several journeys on said passenger aircraft (plural) were actually expl**s**e. But the freight companies say it is not possible to check all freight carried on passenger aircraft because it would be too disruptive to commerce. So, the pilot gets to be scanned or groped, but packages get to board the aircraft untested because of commercial expedience.

It is not about safe, it is about politics.

It's all about big brother trying to keep you scared sh1tless in their effort of full control over the population.

What a golden opportunity was presented with the rise in terrorism :whistling:

This patting down nonsense is just nonsense. for one, the underwear bomber and the shoe bomber boarded planes in EUROPE. Go over there and pat people down. Leave the American citizens out of it.. Second, they should have hot chicks doing the patting down then guys wouldn't mind so much. Of course, then you'd probably have half the men acting suspiciously and wearing fake beards like a scene out of The Life of Brian.

BTW - I've always wondered, what's more dangerous, nail clippers, or someone who has been well-trained in how to kill with their bare hands? They should do background checks on everyone and those with the dangerous skills could be locked into their seats. OK, just kidding, but it still makes more sense than groping grannies looking for explosives.

All of this would be avoided if we would just do the smart thing - profile.

I have to admit that the fair thing to do is let all the "free-thinkers" fly without security if they like.

Us "sheeple" will just have to get to the airport an hour early and fly with other misguided dupes such as ourselves.

It's an outrage! Humiliating all of the public for security theater and big business corruption only. That Cali man is a folk hero. Here's an idea. Refuse the "Rapiscan" screening and demand the genital feel-a-thon. Then, men, be sure to sport massive erections and make flirty small talk, ooh, aah, rougher please ... That should shake 'em up.

Thats actually quite a good idea!

Take a tab of viagra on the way to the airport (in case the security guy is unattractive)

Then complain about the hard-on for the entire aircraft journey ........

''I'm sorry, the security guy started it, can one of the flight attendants finish me off?'

Can you all just imagine ...... an aircraft full of horny guys with raging erections?

While I agree with the freethinking and libertarian concepts in your post ..... Do of course realize that should one of those non-screened flights move one iota from the flight-plan that the free spirits on board will have to welcome the consequence of becoming spirits in fact :)

I've always found the entire ordeal of flying to be quite an unpleasant experience, and that predates the terrorism threat. I find flying to much like being in jail: first there is the body search, then there is the disposal of your personal items and finally you are more or less shackled to a very small seat. All of this is often to go somewhere I would rather not go.

Whether I go through a body scan or a pat down makes no difference to me, I just wish the whole ordeal would go a little quicker. Iraqi executions happen quicker than airport security.

Either this guy was making a stand or he REALLY didn't want to go to South Dakota!

It's Pavlovian dog training for humans.

Get in the scanner and shut up or we'll get minimum wagers to squeeze your testicles and breasts, and run their fingers along your arse crack.

And now I hear that the man in question is being threatened with an $11,000 lawsuit for leaving a security area without being searched.

Can you feel big brother's boot stomping on your head?

Of course, once everyone has accepted the scanners in the airports they will be moved to other areas. A few foiled 'terror' attacks here and there and we'll have them in shopping malls, football stadiums, carnivals, where ever there is a threat of 'terror'.

I've always found it quite strange as to why terrorists are fixated with bombing airlines. Surely, they could cause far more fear, far more easily, by blowing up shopping malls or cinemas or where ever people live their daily lives. Flying is hardly a daily event for most people but going shopping is. Why would the terrorists go to the trouble of making a high tech, compact bomb and then have to smuggle it through airport security when they can just walk into any crowded area to kill, maim and cause fear?

Great idea -for some people. The rest of us won't be "sporting massive erections" when a male TSA employee gropes us. For us, we'll have to do like that airport security scene from the movie This is Spinal Tap - wrap a large cucumber in foil and stick it in our pants.

The Underwear Bomber and the Shoe Bomber. What wonderful examples of high tech 21st century terrorism, using well trained very intelligent experts in blowing up an airplane while in the air, using the most sophisticated explosives, with enough power to bring down a whole fleet of airplanes simultaneously, and then getting caught because they were doing their thing in full view of fellow passengers, fumbling with matches trying to light their shoelaces or their underwear. And all this because their handlers forgot to tell them to retreat to the toilet and explode the airplane from a more discrete position?!?!? I find it mind-bobbling that there is a single person of sound mind who believes this crap.

The result, presuming the Official Explanation of The Government that 'terrorist organisations" or even "Al Quaida" does this, is True, is a huge victory for the 'terrorists', because by sacrificing one man they caused worldwide for hundreds of billions in extra security measures, and where is this money coming from? From the pockets of the Western sheeple of course. And to add insult to injury, 'the terrorists' managed to achieve that hundreds of millions of Westerners are now standing in long lines with their shoes in their hands waiting for a full body scan, or to be groped in the groin, not being allowed anymore to take a bottle of water of anything else liquid aboard an airplane.

The "sheeple" are so gullible that it would be hilarious, if it weren't so pathetic... Because if the 'terrorists' really were out to get you, they would start blowing up shopping mails (next full body scans in shopping malls) they would start blowing up trains (next full body scans in trains) or they would start blowing up any other place where more than a few hundred people might gather (next full body scans everywhere a few hundred people might gather)

It is too late already, civil liberties once surrendered to the government, will NEVER be returned. "Special Powers" once gained by a Government, will never be surrendered...

I in turn find it mind-boggling that some people think that anyone other than a total moron would volunteer to do this stupid shit in the first place. Of course they don't have enough common sense to do it in the toilet. Blowing off your testicles or a foot isn't the same as the instant death you get from a suicide belt or car bomb. These terror-recruiters have to reach down to the bottom of the barrel for these attacks.

So you honestly think that someone who is planning to explode an airplane some 12000 meters up in the sky, is worried if he will die with or without his foot or testicles? Have you ever considered any other than the Official Government Explanation? For instance that Reid was a nut case. Did you ever read his story on http://en.wikipedia....8shoe_bomber%29

"and may have fallen" " what was possibly a test " "attempting to light a match" "a chemical needed to detonate the bomb"

On December 22, 2001, passengers on Flight 63 complained of a smoke smell in the cabin shortly after a meal service. One flight attendant, Hermis Moutardier, thinking she smelled a burnt match, walked the aisles of the plane, trying to assess the source. A passenger pointed to Reid, who was sitting alone near a window and attempting to light a match. Moutardier warned him that smoking was not allowed on the airplane. Reid then promised to stop.

A few minutes later, Moutardier found Reid leaned over in his seat. Her attempts to get his attention failed. After asking "What are you doing?" Reid grabbed at her, revealing one shoe in his lap, a fuse which led into the shoe, and a lit match.

So even after getting caught once, he continued his attempts in full view. You have to scrape the bottom of the barrel extremely well to find a specimen like Reid... The man wasn't even capable of lighting a match "attempting to light a match""

Besides, I am not an expert, but as far as I know C4 can't be detonated without a detonator, wiki writes "

"C4 burns slowly when it is ignited with a flame rather than detonated with a primary explosive,"

Read forgot to bring the primary explosive. The story is so full of holes that it would make a Swiss cheese look utterly solid.

Good for Reid he will spend the rest of his life in jail, and I guess that is what he wanted, following his fathers habit to be in jail and who even advising his son to : " convert to Islam, telling him that Muslims were more egalitarian and they got better food in prison."

In light of flaring controversy over the Transportation Security Administration's enhanced pat-downs and nud_e body scan imaging systems, officials have continued to stress that detailed photographs of passengers' anatomy are not saved and do not get passed around. But, that's not true in all cases. An attorney for the US Marshals admitted in August that over 35,000 images from a body scanner in an Orlando, Florida courthouse were recorded and stored
