Qantas to resume A380 flights on Saturday

2010-11-23 07:37:19 GMT+7 (ICT)

SIDNEY, AUSTRALIA (BNO NEWS) -- Qantas Airways CEO Alan Joyce on Tuesday announced informed that its Airbus A380 fleet will resume flights next Saturday after addressing engine failure issues.

Joyce said the carrier is pleased with the operation of the aircraft and decided that on November 27, Qantas will offer a QF31 service from Sidney to London via Singapore. The CEO said that the company expect to have four A380 back in the air by Christmas season.

On November 4, a Qantas A380 jet operating the QF32 flight from Singapore to Sidney had to make an emergency land after registering an engine failure in mid air. Qantas cataloged the incident as an "uncontained engine failure."

Rolls Royce, the manufacturer of the aircraft's engine, investigated the failure after Qantas decided to ground indefinitely its 6-jet A380 fleet. The British company, after a series of engine checks, determined that that the issue is specific to the Trent 900 and the failure was confined to a specific component in the turbine area of the engine.

The auto-maker replaced the Trent 900 module as it caused an oil fire, which led to the release if the intermediate pressure turbine disc. Passengers aboard the A380 said that they heard a loud explosion and then realized that the blast caused a hole in the aircraft’s wing.

Debris from the explosion fell on Indonesia's Batam Island, near Singapore, without harming anyone. The incident took place shortly after take off and the plane had to return to Changi Airport in Singapore.

They are going to have to slash fares to encourage interest again..

Perhaps the concerns will diminish over time and AB does have a lot riding on this aircraft, so I'd expect maintence and checks to be increased for the next year or so. . However, if one goes by the MD experience, it is going to be difficult going for some time in certain key markets. Prudent flyers avoid the MD11 and MD 80 series. Technically the MD 80 is one of the safest airplanes ever, yet its public image is poor and frequent flyers avoid it like the plague.

I won't be going near the A380 if I can take a B777. Perhaps unfounded and the B777 can even have RR engines. However, I just don't feel comfortable getting on the 380 no matter how comfortable it is.

Can a mod pls explain why stories such as this get 'dumped' into the Thailand Travel forum?

QF don't fly the A380 to BKK, only through Singapore in asia. If anything should this not be in SE Asia Travel forum? Maybe there is a need for a 'general travel' updates type forum?
