I am taking some cuttings from my Nepenthes pitcher plants, which, if they take root, will need to be planted in sphagnum moss. Does anybody know the Thai word for sphagnum moss? Does anybody know if there are any alternatives to s. moss which work just as well?

According to thailanguage.com moss is a loanword Thai-ized as mawt (high tone) หญ้าม็อส ( yaaF mawtH) is literally grass-moss

ตะไคร่ (dtaL khraiF): moss; lichens where dta is to encrust and khrai - beats me.

Sphagnum is a Linnean genus name, so should be recognisable to a specialist, best bet is go poke around Chatuchak market in the ordchids/exotic plants section or in the reptile section, it may be the kind of thing they'd use to decorate a vivarium.

No need to spend the money on sphagnum I would think, why not buy the readily available coir (shredded coconut husk)?

Following your suggestion, I have checked online, and coir is a perfectly acceptable substitute for s. moss. I will give it a try.

From my experience, coir is not as moisture retentive as spagnum moss.
