Cambodia has rolled out the red carpet for Angelina Jolie.

In recognition of the environmental work the actress has done for the country, King Norodom Sihamoni signed a special decree granting the Mr. and Mrs. Smith star Cambodian citizenship.

"The King signed the legal papers and that means she now has Cambodian citizenship," Toun Siphan, director of the government's international relation department, told Reuters on Thursday.

Jolie, who adopted her 4-year-old son, Maddox, from Cambodia in 2002, has said she feels a special tie to the the country.

"When I went to Cambodia something felt like home to me. I knew someone was there who was meant to be in my family. I don't know any other way to explain it," Jolie told London's The Sun in June.

When the country's Prime Minister Hun Sen approached the actress last year about becoming a Cambodian citizen, she said that she would be "thrilled" and "honored" to accept.

The Gia star, who serves as a United Nations goodwill ambassador, bought a home in the Samlot district of northwestern Battambang province shortly after adopting her son.

She has pledged to spend $5 million setting up a wildlife preserve near her residence.

Between her are-they-or-aren't-they relationship with Brad Pitt and her newly adopted daughter, Zahara Marley, Jolie's personal life has been the subject of heavy scrutiny lately.

Last month, the actress traveled to Ethiopia, accompanied by Pitt, to finalize the adoption of the 6-month-old baby girl, whose parents were victims of AIDS.

Upon their return to the States, both Pitt and Zahara were hospitalized--Pitt for meningitis and the baby for malnutrition and dehydration. Both have since been released.

When she's not busy being a mom, Cambodia's newly anointed A-list citizen is tending to her day job.

Jolie is next slated to star in the Robert De Niro-directed pic The Good Shephard, a retelling of 40 years of history in the CIA. The film is currently in preproduction and is scheduled for a 2006 release date.

And the connection to Thailand is that Ankor Wat which is in Cambodia actually belongs to Thailand.

I don't think the Cambodians would agree with that statement.

Weren't there riots there a couple of years ago, with damage to Thai-owned buildings, because of similar views ?

It was actually a misquote that caused it, but it had the same effect. :o

No, now she can work in the hotel next door to where I live as an illegal Cambodian worker and earn 1,500 baht per month.

I worry about the children AJ has adopted, like puppies little people are cute.

Who actualy looks after her adopted children when she's off filming? :D

Sorry to go off on one You parents and step parents know how hard it is to love the little bleeders at times. :o

I <deleted> hate the fact that an actress/actor can adopt children and use them as a fashion accessory/publicity tool.

What happens to these kids when they become hormonally psyched up?

Geewhizzzzzz my two were hard enough to love...............and I gave birth to them.

again.........Sorry to go off on one

To be fair, if thats the kid's only worry, ie. "when is my rich hollywood superstar mum getting home" then she's doing a he11 of a lot better than most Cambodian kids.

Lots of parents work and raise kids, and lots of these hollywood stars take there kids with them on location and that, she'll have a great life.

I wish I could be adopted by Angelina Jolie. Wonder if I could still get her to breast feed? :o

I like AJ.

Don't slag her off, she's different and different is good unless you're small minded.

Agreed! At least she has actually adopted Cambodian kids that would have had a <deleted> life.I don't care if people think they are a fashion statement or not.
