Abhisit pledges House consideration on 2 medical issues

Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva yesterday promised to push two draft bills related to reproductive health and the protection of malpractice victims in the next session of the House of Representatives.

He said he expected that the two bills would help society prevent abortions in teenagers and reduce conflicts between medical workers and patients.

Abhisit was speaking at the "Thailand Medical Expo 2010", organised by the Medical Council of Thailand, 14 royal medical colleges and 18 medical schools.

He said most physical and mental illnesses were caused by unhealthy behaviour, such as consuming unhealthy food, accidents and the failure of the public health system to provide better care. Moreover, new emerging and re-emerging diseases are also threatening people's health.

To tackle the public health burden caused by unhealthy behaviour, Abhisit said the government would strictly control the consumption of alcohol. It will also tighten measures to handle road accidents.

As to the increasing conflicts between medical workers and patients, he said the government would resolve this problem by pushing the draft Medical Malpractice Victims Protection Bill for consideration in the next session of the House after it failed to be submitted for the recent session.

He said he believed the bill would be fair for both medical workers and patients.

Yea, right. :whistling:

Sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Should learn from America that opening up malpractice suits will effectively delete the volunteer rescue service and be open for all kinds of new corruption scams.

Well done Abhisit

I agree with the PM with limitations. Having ability to sue for malpractice is a good option but in Thailand the payout would be petty cash. When the BTS collapsed during its construction on the taxi making the poor bastard pancake, the family got 1M Baht compensation. How will that affect decisions on malpractice? whistling.gif

Well that will sure go a long way to shut down illegal abortion clinics.

How can a educated man make such a stupid mistake in the face of what has just happened with illegal abortion clinics. This is defiantly not on his good job list.
