Considering taking wife, 3 yo, 1 yo, and maid via bus since I can't afford the massive scam from Bangkok Airways. Anyone done it recently and any comments on the wisdom of doing this with kids???

Nobody answered and I have not done that trip though have used buses inside Cambodia - ok but not much leg room (except some Mekong Express buses (see below) and journey times always longer than published.

Register on Khmer440, the TV.com equivalent for Cambodia expats and ask them. I think you will get more experience to draw on.

For a little more money you could consider flying to Phnom Penh with Air Asia (about $65 one way, all in) and busing back to SR ($5 -$10: the $10 Mekong Express is quite civilized: journey 7-8 hours). The only downside is you would need to spend a night in PP, given that AA flies out only once a day and it's mid afternoon - but sampling PP is not a bad thing. You might also investigate getting a taxi from the Thai Poipet border to SR. you would get one for $80-$100 I believe

www.canbypublications is perhaps the best single country traveller's website I have ever come across. Really good on travel plans and schedules and good hotel, restaurant, bar listings. Gets 10 out of 10 from me.

Thanks - I have been offered a 10,000B round trip private van from my apartment to Poipet, cross border, get picked up by SUV and taken to hotel which I'm thinking about doing. With 2 young kids, gone are the days of doing it on the cheap. Now, to find a serviced apartments that will give us at least 2 bedrooms and not break the bank.....sure was a lot easier to plan trips when I was a smelly, cheap, Khao San Road backpacker. I've been to SR before so hopefully the experience will help.

That's a long old Drive with the little on'e sin Tow isn't it ??

They made the 24 hour flight back to the US East Coast twice in the last year with no problem - this should be a breeze.

I would probably do the same thing. In fact, I did....the last time I went to Cambodia. :) You can fly on Air Asia from Bangkok to Phnom Penh, then take a bus/van/car to Siem Reap. The trip was about 5-6 hours and cost about 300 baht/person for a shared (non-private) mini van. I looked into the possibility of booking a private van and I think it was about 3000-4000 baht. In the end, this would probably cost more than the van/SUV all the way from Bangkok to Siem Reap, but it would be much faster, and in my opinion, more comfortable and safe. The major roads in Cambodia are very different than the highways in Thailand.
