Advice On Short / Long Stay

Dear All

Firstly, this is my first post. I hope I don't upset anybody by repeating questions etc. it's not intentional if I do.

O.K.

I'm 37, single, bored with my job, no commitments and have an "income" of £1500 / month until next October 2006.

Currently I'm paying £530 per month to rent a flat plus all of the extras like Council Tax etc. etc.

So, I was thinking. Is it worth me moving somewhere cheaper to live ?

Main concerns are :

(1) More boredom

(2) Stomach upsets

(3) Quality of "cheap" accomodation

Any ideas?

Or should I just try it for a vacation first. If so, where's best for Xmas / New Year?

Oh, and I'll be travelling alone so I need to be able to meet lots of people.

Thanks

Paul

Well, to begin with, 1,500 pounds is about 111,000 that baht (per month !). You might be able to squeak by on that, as long as you are willing to live in a serviced apartment (say about 15,000 baht a month),

stick to 2 or fewer women per night (1 per night x 30 days = 30,000 baht. Go for a discount).

Food ? Depends where and how much you eat. Should be able to get by on 500 baht per day (15,000/month)

Booze ? By the bottle (beer) or by the bottle (hard stuff). 500 baht a night should be enough to get you wasted (avoid buying for everyone in the bar). 15,000/month.

So, we have housing, food, beverages and "entertainment" covered at about 75,000 baht a month, leaving about 36,000 for "incidentals" (liver surgery, laundry, monthly visa runs, ect.

Honestly, you can get by fairly cheap here. My tiny little (thai style) apartment goes for 3,000 baht/month (incl. electricity and cable TV). I can eat pretty good on 300 per day (9,000/month). I don't drink all that much (4-5 times a week ?), and if I do, I'll buy a bottle of Mekong or Sam Song (rum), and I'm good for the night (5,000 baht/month ?) Other "entertainment" ? Well, that's a little trickier, but lets say we give the "girlfriend" an allowance and the odd present or two, now and then. Maybe 10,000/month. Total = 27,000 baht/month.

(note: I work outside the country alot, so having a larger apartment just isn't worth it)

Others will tell you that 1,500 pounds is barely poverty line, and if you want to live a hi-so (high society) lifestyle, then yes, it won't cut it.

If you want to be an average joe, then 1,500 should be more than adequate.

Main concerns are :

(1) More boredom

(2) Stomach upsets

1) Boredom ? On another thread (relating to Pattaya), we came up with over 40 different things to see and do in Pattaya, without going near a bar/disco/go-go club/massage parlour/ect.

You'll only be bored if you want to be. Join the ex-pats club. Do a little networking with some of the long-timers.

2) Stomache upsets ?Buy some immodium/Pepto Bismal/what ever to tide you over for the first little while if you are worried. Plenty of pharmacies around. Don't drink the tap water. You can buy filtered water for 5 baht a bottle (that's about 15 bottles per english pound !).

The only time I have "internal" problems is when I spend 10 hours drinking in a bar(s), and eat nothing. It's self inflicted and makes the hang-overs that much more memorable !

3) Cheap accomodation ? How cheap are you thinking ? My tiny little broom closet is adequate (for now) at 3,000/month (about 41 pounds). There are serviced apartments a block over that appear to be quite nice (built about 6-8 months ago), going from 6-12,000 baht/month (82-164 pounds/month).

If you have the opportunity, it is best to come for a visit first. Look around a couple of different areas (say, Pattaya, Phuket, Bangkok, Chang Mai) to decide where you'd like to be, then start looking for a place.

I stayed in the same hotel 6 different times before I got an apartment (right across the street from the hotel). I'm browsing (casually) for a bigger, better place, but am not in a rush.

If you have any more questions, feel free to ask. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on here, and a few smart-@sses :o

Try searching the site as well. Most of the questions you might have, have probably already been asked a few times before.
