What Is The Best Way To Compaction Of Soil With Water?

Neither. Lay your soil out and let set for one year. Mother nature will take care of the rest. Most land and home owners that have purchased property use this method when it come to fill.

This month I had 6 truckloads of s(p)oil laid on my drive and driven over by the tractor.

My wife tells me to spray every day for a month and all the soil will have gone down between the stones etc and perhaps once a week sweep all the loose stones to the side.

The proper western way is to get a vibrating compactor plate and use that daily after spraying for a few days.

However as I live out in the stick where things like have never been heard of I follow my wife's advice for 2 reasons.

1 It is cheaper

2 My ears don't hurt as she can't nag me

the floor for secound floor cover the area, so Mother nature can not help anymore.

It does seem that Thai's generally let Mother Nature handle the soil settling/compacting by dumping the dirt/raising the land a meter or so, and then letting it settle for "at least" a year. Between the raining season and dry season Mother Nature can do a pretty good job in settling soil. Then when it's time to lay the foundation, Thai's will usually compact the soil by running whatever heavy machinery (truck, backhoe, tractor, etc) they can get their hands on. The the concrete foundation is laid.

I know here in my moobaan in Bangkok where construction of houses is still ongoing the moobaan developer/owner/builder generally scraps/clears the land, then drives 10-12 ft long concrete poles into the dirt the house foundation will be made on, then dumps dirt on the pole tops usually from the street/sewer diggings, lets the rainy and dry seasons do their magic in settling the dirt for a year, then in the dry season they use some of their heavy machinery to press down the dirt, and then they lay the gravel and concrete foundation over the poles/raised dirt. It definitely makes a solid foundation based on me looking at the condition of the houses in the moobaan which range from brand new to almost 20 years old...and I'm pretty sure the moobaan developer (same one for the last 20 years) has been making the foundations the same way for the last 20 years or so. My two story house is 3 years old and doesn't have any significant cracks, except a few of those hairline cracks on the outside wall surface/paint in a few places....none of those cracks that go deep and long, you can slip a piece of paper or something larger in, etc.

We need some more information. You built the second floor and now you want to compact the ground underneath it? It sounds as if you need a mechanical compactor. Spread the fill in thin layers and compact each layer before adding the next one.

Can you clarify? Are you wanting to building a second story to your home or what? Please clarify...thanks.

Second floor are finish.

Around the foundation and pillars it is not yet settled.

I see what others are doing here is just pouring water on to they make the floor.

but is that realy enough?

Having moved dirt around in Thailand and witnessing its sponginess walking on it a year later I must admit I am skeptical this is a substitute for mechanical compaction. In the US it is believed soil should be laid in thin layers and each layer individually compacted mechanically. Below is the position from a professional contractor in the US:

Self-Compacting Soil Has Not Been Invented Yet

One of the misconceptions I often encounter is the belief that soil will densify and strengthen if it's merely dumped on a site and left undisturbed for several months--that fill dumped in a low area in the fall will be ready to support construction in the spring without any compaction. To this opinion, I always respond: "'Fraid not."

It's probably too late to compact/strengthen the soil under a already laid foundation...once the foundation is laid, the only thing that is going to effectively compact the soil is the weight of the foundation/house structure...and yes, the foundation/structure may settle unevenly with soft soil underneath the laid foundation.
