A notorious ustaz wanted for many insurgent attacks was possibly behind Saturday's deadly ambush on two solders in Yala, an intelligence source said yesterday.

The defence intelligence source identified the Muslim religious leader as Rohing Raman, who was active in two tambon in Muang district and three tambon in Raman district.

Two of the four gunmen on the back of a pickup truck that was caught on a surveillance camera were also identified as Sofwan Samah and Usman Tengsamae.

The militants fired on the two soldiers while they were escorting a monk on his morning rounds for alms.

The source said Rohing's gang was trained by the Runda Kumpulan Kecil (RKK) group, while Sofwan and Usman were key RKK members. The gang has been wanted for various shootings and bomb attacks in the southern province.

The footage showed the two soldiers leading the monk to a vehicle with the pickup truck slowly approaching them. The four gunmen in the bed sprayed bullets on the soldiers and the monk, then fled. The two soldiers died instantly while the monk ducked and sustained sprains and bruises from falling to the ground.

Lt Colonel Thanut Phisalsitthiwat, a local commander, said all six people in the pickup truck had been identified based on their prior connection and the licence plate number visible in the footage, although five of them wore masks.

The two soldiers were identified as Corporal Suriya Chaiyant and Private Sunsudi Masae.

Phra Sawat Khemawino said he was considering moving away if he found it unsafe to stay on at Hua Saphan Temple as its only monk, but would make up his mind after the New Year break.

The monk said he had returned to this temple and stayed for two years to maintain the morale of Buddhist residents.

Lt General Udomchai Thammasarot, commandergeneral of the Fourth Army Area, said Saturday's attack was in retaliation for heightened security measures and the arrests of many insurgents.

Many of them were shot dead during operations when they refused to be arrested, he said.

The military was ready to give support to police and civil defence officials, who are responsible for security in urban areas, including the scene of the attack, he said.

Civilian security measures and patrols have been intensified in the areas near the attack scene - an industrial estate near the Pattani River, Mayor Phongsak Yingchonjaroen said. The last attack there was a few years ago, when soldiers were killed, he added.

Not sure where you got the idea it was a religion of peace.

Kill the infidels is not really a part of peace. And as the article points out there are those willing to do just that.

Now that I think about it. Would you be a bad Muslim if you didn't kill the infidels.

People may say what they like and think what they like but that is a part of there religion. And any casual reading through the international papers will show them doing just that.

It will also show them for some reason doing it to themselves. A strange religion.

This statement seems particularly harsh, especially that there were 'many' of them. Maybe it is down to the translation.

Yes 72 nuns armed with oozes to stay that way.

Were they shooting missiles at them when they refused to be arrested or bombing them from helicopters when they refused to be arrested.

The way the article portrays it is they were in the mosque in prayer or helping some old lady across the street when they were arrested for no reason at all. Where I come from and the time a long time ago, if a article like that was printed we would say the reporter had to back up to get his pay check. For you youngsters it means he was to ashamed of his work to face any one.
