I Miss My Western Food :(

Recommended Posts

I have been here for 7 months now, and I love everything about Thailand, especially the food. But every now and then, I really miss certain things about home, which is especially certain foods. I have tried getting ingredients together and making my own, etc. Which is nice. Also, i have visited a few Farang establishments, but nobody does it like you can get it from home.

The things I most miss.

Proper fish and chips from a fish shop.

A nice big chicken and lamb mixed doner kebab after a few beers on a Friday night

A proper sunday roasty with big Yorkshire puddings and rich thick gravey.

Believe it or not, i even miss my favourite Thai restaurant, the food is totally different there, obviousy catering to the British taste buds.

lamb casserole with mint and rosemary.

Fish fingers, proper homecooked chips and mushy peas.

Corned beef and onion pasties. (indigestion)

Sorry if i'm making anyone suffer ;)

And before the keyboard warriors attack and try to tell me my diet is going to drive me to an early grave.. i actually eat mostly salads and good wholefoods, but these are the things i miss.

Also.... before everyone shouts "Go Home then" .. "No, it's too much to give up for a few meals"

Ahh well... one day.

I empathize with you, fish and chips here are just not as good here to be honest :(

But I happen to absolutely love Thai food, so no problems here.

Try some new food too, do you like Indian food, Mexican food, Chinese food?

I love Indian food with its smooth, spicy, rich texture, the paneer is amazing.

Also try the South Indian food, the iddly Manchurian (don't ask me why it's named that way)

The iddly Manchurian is absolutely fantastic.

You must not live in Pattaya. We've got British food up the hoo hah 'round here.

There are many Indian dishes that are called Manchurian. It's a trendy fusion thing, Chinese influenced Indian, I first had it in the US where there are specialist restaurants for it, but I reckon it started a while back in India. Of course not all these fusion dishes are called Manchurian, but those that are, are definitely fusion.

Yup. Pattaya has at least two chippies that are better than home.

One does fish (Pacific dory) & chips for only 120 Baht. Delicious.

In our neck of the woods (Buriram province) you can buy a small fish (Dory) & chips for 70 Baht at Coffee Corner in Prakhonchai. Burger & chips is 100 Baht and the 250g fillet steak 225 Baht. I like the Roast Chicken with Yorkshire Pud, stuffing and 4 veg for 165.

Cheers folks. Miserable as I am at spending my first Xmas in six years in London I had shoulder of lamb with all the trimmings for dinner tonight.....I reckon on bangers and mash tomorrow...with a tasty onion gravy of course.

Any more great suggestions would be most welcome.....oh the piccallilli I'm savig for a lazy Boxing Day watching the footie. ;)

Now you are talking, just need some nice (real) mature cheddar, some piccalilli, cream crackers..... sorted!

I brought some half decent mature cheddar, Piccaililli and even some Branston in Villa only yesterday. Most stores have cream crackers but TOPS stocks the packs of Jacobs Cream Crackers and even the Waitrose Biscuits for Cheese.

I suggest you try the fish and chip shop on Sukhumvit Soi 23. I don't see how anyone can say its not the same -if not better- than what you'd get back home.

Its amazing what 12 bottles of beer in Soi Cowboy can do to your tatse buds, the place is a dump and the bar next door is even worse.

Fish & Chips = Witch's = Eddy's finest

Kebab = near Grace Hotel on Sukhumvit Soi3

Sunday Roast = Many of the British pubs, eg Robin Hood, Dubliner etc

Lamb Casserole = some of the British pubs. Bus Stop on Sukhumvit Soi 4 - if it's still there

Burger Chips and Peas, also pies and pasties, Bangers & Mash + Pedigree/Tetley's Bitter = Crossbar

Fishfingers = KFC !!! (No joke!)

I have to agree about KFC - the fish fingers are delicious (creamy mashed potato not bad either)

:whistling:

Each to his own as they say.

Now I'm an American, and I do like my Big Macs and Fries. But I know it isn't good for me...although I do still break down on occasions.

I'm officially here in Bangkok now (long term stay), and on the way to my first "retirement visa" extension. Been here in Bangkok for a little over a month now.

In that time my wieght is down about 2 kilos and my blood pressure has gone from 140 over 90 to 130 over 80. I have a problem in my right leg, and even that is starting to clear up since I've been here.

95% of my food is Thai...Rice and (whatever). Low sugar and no MSG please. (My Thai girlfriend orders the food, and makes sure of that.) She also needs a low sugar/low fat diet so she cooks a lot of stews and soups for both of us. (She uses a lot of Thai vegatables and herbs, and she's a very good cook.)

Yes, I still would like a bit of western food every now and then. I also enjoy Chinese food, Korean food, and Sushi.

But, as for me, I can see that the Thai rice and (whatever) diet is improving my general health.

For that reason, I'll be staying with it. I'm even starting to like it.

P.S. My Thai girlfriend is in her 60's if you're wondering...and she was taught to cook a good 50 years ago before Thai food was all MSG and stir-fry in oil, so she cooks like the Thais used to before they got "westerized".

Blimey, IMA_FARANG - I think you are the first falang toyboy I have come across.

Goosess F&C in Pattaya was excellent. It is the only one in Thailand that I have tried that tasted pretty much as good as back home.

Hmm all that food talking makes me hungry  .

That is one of the major reasons I live in Pattaya, plenty of Farang food available and to a decent price too.

Only thing missing here (Pattaya) are some Greek restaurants and proper minced beef meat for burgers.
