Where Can I Buy A Displayport Cable?

Recommended Posts

I live upcountry and have been looking around locally as well as calling up most of the major IT stores in Thailand trying to find a male to male displayport cable or even better a male to male displayport to mini displayport cable.

After explaining to the sales people that I don't need a DVI cable, nor a HDMI cable nor a VGA cable, I usually just get blank looks. So I then google it and show them what I need and why I need it, but so far, nothing.

Has anybody ever seen one here in Thailand for sale?

The reason I need the Displayport cable.

To run an eyefinity setup, at least one monitor needs to be connected via displayport. The new 6970's from AMD actually have mini displayport, thus the desire to find a cable with a mini displayport to displayport cable. The monitor it will be connecting to is a Dell U2311H. Believe it or not, no Displayport cable comes in the Dell box, and Dell Thailand doesn't have any for sale.

Has anybody ever seen one here in Thailand for sale?

I had to google to find out what you are talking about.......

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DisplayPort

Nice speed, but not exactly an industry standard.......... :whistling:

I don't know what you mean by not "industry standard". This type of cable is the new standard especially for high resolution monitors. Newer motherboards and VGA cards already comes with this type of port.

The reason iMacs had to adopt it is because their bigger monitor models has a resolution of 2560Γ—1440 which is too high for DVI/HDMI to handle.

I also suggest you try ask a Mac shop for the cable.

Also, perhaps try to tell your local computer shop that the cable is for a Mac, in case they are not aware of the proper name of the cable.

Thank you for the suggestions, After having to "teach" each of the major local shops about the connection type, I have come up with nothing. However, a couple of the local shops are trying to call their contacts in bkk to see if they have any. I've scoured as many thai websites as I could, including apple thailand, and also come up nill. Apple thailand did however have mini displayport to mini displayport male to male connectors, but I need either standard sized connectors or standard to mini.

If all else fails, I may have to make a trip to bkk in person, or ship something international.

@astral I'm not going to get into the technical differences of different cables or into what is industry standard or not. However, it is slightly ironic that you are commenting on something that you state you had no prior knowledge of.

have you tried sending an email and photo of the cable and the use intended to the support guys at InvadeIt who is a sponsor here. They are real good about answering questions and the delivery service is very good.

Well, if you would end up having to go to Bangkok to get it, there's a cable shop at the 4th floor Pantip plaza just outside the glass elevator. You can't miss it because it's the first shop beside the elevator.

They got cables for everything and at a very reasonable price. Some of the other shops can flog you for cables, but this place is cheap and so far I haven't had any problems with cables I bought there.

Just a quick update on the displayport cable. I still have not been able to locate the male to male mini displayport to displayport cable. I have contacted apple, Belkin, Dcom, Synnex, Advice, Hardware house, JIB and others. I did get some very good and prompt help from the nice people at InvadeIT, but unfortunately they couldn't find me a cable.

I have also just called Gigabyte Thailand (the brand of graphics card I have), and they couldn't help me either. I am aware that they are not in the business of selling cabling etc, but I thought they might know where to get it. I have also called the people at AMD Thailand. The thinking goes that it would behoove them to make sure that the local distributors of their products here in Thailand would have the proper cabling.

They are currently trying to help me find the proper cables, and noted that more displayport cables should be available by the end of January 2011. So, apparently they are trying to get more supplies of the cables here in Thailand. I am holding out hope that I can get a cable locally, before turning to international stores.

Just found cables in Singapore on ebay, but all are generic cables. 500Baht delivered to my house is much better then 3000+ baht from sites in the US or Europe. It may be a waste of money, but then again I may end up saving 2500+ baht. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

I'll post again once I get the cable and let people know if it works or not!

@negreanu Thanks for the reply, but I don't live close to Bangkok. I haven't had the opportunity to make it to Panthip, plus I have already called the istudio and called Belkin and both said they didn't have the cable I need. I need a mini displayport to displayport. They have mini to mini displayport, but that won't do me any good. They also have adapters from mini displayport to vga or hdmi and also dvi, however, many people have compatability issues with them. Sometimes the AMD gfx cards don't like apple adapters, sometimes it is the lcd that doesn't like the adapter.

I'd rather just avoid the adapters altogether and get the proper cable I need.

As for getting the cable at Aamazon, sure I could have bought the $12 cable, then paid an extra 2000++baht for shipping, duties, taxes etc etc.

So, again, I appreciate the reply but not the condescension.

Condescension.....whatever dude good luck with it and my advice is go get your free help somewhere else than here people post to try and assist and give their time to help.

Amazon is not an extra 2000++ on duties and shipping but then again u know better.

What about CA Assembly? $14 and $14 to ship to thailand by fedex 3 day deliver? No?

And if your worried about non shipping companies to Thailand then use shipitto.com.

Any us Dealer -Shipito.com US Priority $23.00

for a cable sized packet and weight.

People are trying to help you as you requested help on here. Now you just come across as a Tw@t .

YES, it just arrived today. So far so good, got it plugged in and working. The cable isn't branded, but seems to be of sufficient quality. Just hope that it stays working.

The cable took 8 days from ordering off of ebay Singapore to arrival at my door. For 500 baht (including postage etc), for a male to male 10' mini displayport to displayport cable, not bad. Much cheaper then ordering from the states or Europe.

I am used to having 2 monitors, so the whole multi monitor thing isn't new to me. I will mainly be using the 3rd monitor as a tv or for when I play games in the eyefinity 3x1 setup. However, I now have a slight dilema. I was planning on upgrading my cpu and mainboard to the new Intel i7-2600K processor on a p67 chipset. After playing some games with eyefinity, I have realized that the 3 differend sizes of lcd monitors isn't ideal. (22" viewsonic at 1680 x 1050, 26 samsung T260 at 1920 x 1200, 23" dell U2311H) I really like my new Dell u2311H, it is a beautiful monitor. It is also good for the eyefinity setup because it has a thin bezel. So I might get 2 more u2311H monitors. Then upgrade the cpu later.

Just a quick update.

I've been using the cable mentioned above for a couple of months now and I haven't had a single issue.

The seller off of the ebay singapore site is hdmihome2010.

They sent the cable from China and on the customs declaration form they just said "gift."

The exact cable that I bought is here.

The price of the cable is about the same as before. US $16.88 S$21.39 or about B500.
