PM: Government aims to provide sustainable stability and happiness to Thais

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said his government has aimed to provide sustainable stability and growth to the country while return happiness to Thais as New Year's gifts.

In his address on his government's performance during the past two years and targets to achieve in the future at Government House yard, Mr Abhisit said the government has implemented urgent measures and laid down the foundation for strong and sustainable social and economic development.

He said his administration's objectives were clear as it wanted to work for the benefit of the people, improve the economy for sustainable growth and foster equality in society.

He said the gross domestic product for this year should grow by at least 7.9 per cent. The unemployment rate dropped to 343,000 people, or 0.9 per cent, this year.

Exports rose to US$17.7 billion from November 2008 to November 2010. Exports were worth $11.8 billion before the government entered office.

Tourist arrivals increased more than expected, from 14.6 million people in 2008 to 15.2 million in 2010.

The Thai stock exchange index rose from 449.96 points in 2008 to 1,002.90 this year which was not speculation but was based on strong growth of listed firms.

He said the next goal was to increase revenue and cut living costs for everyone. The premier said one of the most popular policies was free 15-year education scheme.

The government would continue the allowance scheme for elderly and disable, he said, adding that the amount of Bt500 baht per month may not be a large amount but it could help the elderly and their families.

On issues of security, he said the dire situation in the three southernmost provinces continues but the authorities have been fostering closer relations with local residents. Martial law has been repealed in four districts in Songkhla and before New Year, the emergency decree will be lifted for the first time in one district of Pattani.

However, he expressed concerns over narcotics, social divide and corruption.

He said the authorities are cracking down on the drug syndicates as could be seen from the amount of narcotics confiscated by the anti-drug related agencies.

He said that another major concern is corruption. While Thailand's ranking has improved in terms of foreign corruption index but that's not enough.

The last major concern is the social conflict, he said, adding that the government is working to reduce dissent and to make sure that no matter the differences, people have to be able to coexist and live together. (MCOT online news)

Completely round the wrong way. <_<

On close scrutiny they are very similar to

me,myself and I :ermm:

I noticed the number of visitors this year is lower than TAT offered up.

To my way of thinking to much emphasis put on business need more on social matters.

How ever in all fairness with the Pheu Thai and red shirts working against every thing except bringing Thaksin back he has done a remarkable job.B)

while return happiness to Thais as New Year's gifts.

I am sure all Thai's will be very grateful. That is of course after the constitution has been changed.

The unemployment rate dropped to 343,000 people, or 0.9 per cent, this year.

Thailand must have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the World!!

Also surprised he didn't mention the 34 Billion Dust Free road project.

The first built in the transport ministers own backyard.

A laudable figure if quite a large number of those people weren't earning a daily salary that would preclude them from buying a couple of Big Macs with fries should they so wish.

If the figures are correct:

Jobless - 0.9 per cent

Exports - US$17.7 billion

Tourists up 900,000

SET up 300%

... kinda makes the OP in the other bog about this Govt not performing as well as the Shinawatra regime - look lame!

:)

You know how it works ....

Lies

Goddamn lies

and Statistics :)

Fortunately, we may have 4-5 more years of Abhisit and his coalition to dig Thailand out of the pit that was set up for the benefit of Thaksin. Including further decentralization of the government and more REAL social equality for the rural poor (and not just a few in isaan and the north.)

Abhisit is trying but he needs to understand that Thailand is not Bangkok. His latest ploy to keep diesel below 30 Baht per ltr. applies only in Bangkok, in the North it is 70+ satang per ltr. dearer. Perhaps it would be better if he subsidised the cost of delivery and and allowed all Thais particularly in the rural areas to buy at the same price as the generally wealthier people in Bangkok. This would at least demonstrate that he is serious about helping the rural areas and creating greater equality.
