I'm so glad that mega projects will be completed in shorter times and according to the blueprint. Just like Thappraya Road? How long did they fuff around with what was going to be an Esplanade on Beach Road? And it is still like a Corporation rubbish tip. Was it only eight years ago that a deputy Mayor promised to clear the freelance ladies and katoeys off Beach Road and said that he would stake his reputation on achieving just that? May I sardonically point out that his reputation is unsullied?

If anybody is contemplating holding their breath waiting for this pie in the sky plan to become reality they might give some thought about who the current Mayor's father is, the road surface of Pattay Tai Road and who owned the company responsible, and whether practices like shovelling spoil down into the new sewage pipe thereby making it less than efficient in its task will be cut out..

Two of my personal bete noires are the frequency of traffic signals breaking down and the knitting over our heads that is unsightly, unreliable and often dangerous. If the lessons that fibre optics are more reliable, out of sight under ground and able to carry huge amounts of traffic have not been learned and applied then I shudder to think how avant guard these latest proposals will be.

Usually after this many replies there's at least one in agreement with the original topic.

I wonder if there is a single member of TV that believes Pattaya can become a world class tourist destination without flattening the whole place first.

There must be someone. Who are you?

Sometimes I'm sure Thai Visa make these stories up, because this is just blood-boilingly absurd to anyone who lives here, if it's true.

The police run riot, scams are everywhere, the mayor is unable to control anyone unless its a business owner asking him to cut a ribbon, all infrastructure projects are badly executed to the point of incompetence, and Beach Road is full of whores, drug dealers and scammers.

A little effective backyard-cleaning might be in order before asking for giant pots of money which will fund a few peoples' retirements, more than actually change things on the ground.

Don't worry, they are dreaming, I just like to know where they get those ridiculous figures from, before they will see any improvement, they will have to get read of all the Russians first. And than clean up the Beach so one can swim without getting itchy all over.

Ha ha... best laugh I've had in ages. Pattaya has dug itself into a hole that is so deep that flattening the place would be the best use of the 15 billions. There's no planned infrastructure, hardly any public transport outside Beach and 2nd Road (unless you count riding pillion on a motorbike with a plastic bucket on your head public transport), slow and unreliable internet, ditto water supply, cars everywhere, traffic jams everywhere, pedestrian zones only in bar areas and shopping malls, no sidewalks except on the main roads, taxis that refuse to use meters and only exist where ignorant tourists can be expected to be found, mediocre beaches with polluted water, most buildings older than ten years look like they are ready to be torn down already...

Apart from low prices, some excellent restaurant and lots of willing (but greedy) girls, Pattaya has very little to offer. It is, and will always be, the playing ground for the horny and the price conscious. World-Class? I guess one can build a World-Class hotel anywhere, but as a travel destination, Pattaya hasn't been World-Class since before they opened the first bar.

They have to get read of all the scambags first and clean up the beach, which has been promised 30 years ago, in the meantime

I am 30 years older and want go back to Pattaya if you paid me.

Well I can not agree with spending any more money on it.

Word of mouth has made Pattaya a world class destination.

It is unrivaled for Drunkenness and Depravity.

Kinda like a slum with a business district and bedroom.

In 15-20 years, 320 rai (about 51 hectares) of Koh Lan, off the coast of Pattaya, will be open to bidding for building and managing three hotels. The hotel concessions will run 30 years

They can't even plan 1 week ahead in this country now they already make predictions about what they gonna do 20 years ahead.

Surprised that there is no mention of the 101 businesses taken down at the seaside of walking street, probably the one who planned and got a budget for that merely 20 years ago isn't in the running anymore.

At least one positive thing in the story...... "which led to the scrapping of plans for a monorail and an above-sea building"

I liked how they slipped that news in as if it was a trifle. Wait to see how they drop this entire new plan in the future as yet another trifle. Mai bpen rai!?!

I believe it could but that is not the same thing as believing it will. You wouldn't need to flatten the city, you would need to totally change the leadership and social structure running the place. The basics are there to build upon and there is no need to wipe out the sleaze either, just make it one ingredient of many.

I agree change the leadership but it will have to start very very high up the list, all government persons found guilty instant dismissal and the prosecutions should start now , no more paying your way out of crime.

Look at copy dvds for example that could be stopped within weeks if the sellers were prosecuted and jailed if neccessary.

I am seriously wondering who is advising Pattaya City Hall in marketing?!

One of the most basic principles in marketing is that if you have a great product, you better don't change it, just to fine-tune it to adjust it to the tiny shifts in market demands.

What Pattaya is reknowned for - worldwide! - is to be a huge party town and (hold yourself!) a big brothel. KEEP IT THAT WAY. DON'T CHANGE IT. THAT's WHAT PEOPLE ARE COMING THERE FOR, taking up with flights of 24 hours and more for it. I hate to wake anyone up there in City Hall, but people don't come for the beaches, nor for 'Nong Nooch Garden' or even 'Water Park'! . Also, if there are any 'seminars' held in Pattaya, they are organized there so that the managers (and visitors) can have wild sex parties after it, also NOT because they want to enjoy the beaches or the great 'restaurants'!.

Stay with the brand, but make it more enjoyable, SAFE and get rid of all the fun-breakers so many tourists have to experience when coming to Pattaya!!

As there are:

- scams of all kinds (jetski, condo sales, timeshare, museums, gold, jewellery, police setups etc.)

- mafia issues (extortion, blackmailing, threats,..)

- pickpocketing

- stealing (I heard that even the wonderful Thais do it!)

- no pavements in 90% of the city

- using a bicycle or inline skates is life threatening

- traffic jams (many of them actually caused by police 'guidance'!)

- lack of service (unfriendly staff & service in restaurants, bars, offensive behaviour if no 'tipping', badmouthing of tourists and expats,..)

- drugs!

- HIV in bars (tests are often just a joke)

- officially sanctioned (!) double- up to quadriple (!) pricing at many tourist spots

- taxi meter scams

- dirty beaches (well actually health hazards)

- roads full of potholes

- Thappraya Road is a complete MESS since YEARS

- ...

I could go on for hours!

Whilst it maybe true that few would come just for the beaches, there are MANY who would come for the beaches AND the "adult" nightlife. I think it's the combination that is the "strength" so if the beach reaches a certain state of filth, then part of the attraction is gone, so a tourist might as well stay in BKK for the "adult" nightlife. I have met a lot of people who do come simply becasue there is a fairly acceptable beach (close-ish to BKK) to lounge about during the day. I think emphasis should be on beach as an equal to whatever else. Pattaya without its beach will just be a larger Patpong/Nana/Cowboy and for just that, one can stay in BKK and save a 2 hour drive. BKK has everything Pattaya offers except the beach!

one big the problem with this idea is the fact that the sea water around the beaches is contaminated and filthy and it always will be due to the location of pattaya in the gulf, Koh Larn on recent visits where the water can be marginally cleaner is now getting worse, samed beach now has a brown foam on top of the water obviously from the flushing of the many toilets along beach, it is quite discusting, How about doing some water testing like they do in the west it might highlight some of the growing issues concerning cleanliness, pattaya beach resort is a joke, I've been here 6 years and never set my big toe in the water, people I know that have have become ill with various infections and stomach upsets

one thing that may be on the cards though that might upset a number of people here are the secret plans to turn the area into a gambleing mecca once the law is changed, this will turn the area into a very expensive place indeed with wealthy travelers coming here just for the casinos etc, Las Vegas - Pattaya..........................and this info from a very large developer here

Pattaya World class resort ? What a joke !!!

The only way to do that would be to confine the girly bars, Boys bars, etc etc to one small seedy area of the city the same as Amsterdam and even Sydney

But as we all know this is impossible in Thailand because there appears to be no form of control with any business, legal and illegal

The mafia and the police would not want to have Pattaya listed as World class because it would drive away the sex trade, and as we know that is how the police and mafia make money.

They certainly will not make money from a clean city

Pattaya full of law abiding citizens ? Oh look another Thai pig flying by.

Thailand and Thais are about making money by any means possible And the biggest money maker in Thailand is sex for sale But no we must not call it prostitution because prostitution is illegal in Thailand isn't it ?

If the Thais want a World class resort they should let Farangs build a new CLEAN city here and let Western companies run it NOT corrupt Asians

Interesting idea. Make Pattaya an international zone. Allow foreign residents to vote and run for local offices ...

For more world class, you need more world.

I am not for Pattaya becoming Monte Carlo even if that was possible, and it isn't. Like others have said, start simple, take out the trash! Yes clean up the beaches and the water there to make them safe to swim. Fix the infrastructure. Fix the public transport mess. And so on. Then think grand when you have something decent to work with.

To me the ideal Pattaya would still be diverse, with room for all classes and nationalities. Truly great cities aren't for the elite only. San Francisco is an example of a city that has become much less interesting since it was taken over by the rich. Also, starting as a whorehouse is no impediment to become a great city. There are many examples of this globally, and all those places still have plenty of whores, thank the deity of your choice.
