Age of consent*  in Thai's law  people who have age 17-20 , are not reaching to the one's majority  yet ..so if  they want to marry , they need to be allowed from  Parents before

Thanks for that Bambi. Correction for my post, age of consent in UK 16 but to get married must have parents permission if under 18

Interesting subject.

It seems to combine, knowledge, democracy and influence, the law, sex, morality, human development and drinking into one big cocktail – just like all of these issues are, often misguidedly, in certain parts of our society.

As a parent (two adult children in their early 20’s plus a six year old “after-thought”), I sincerely believe, and have practised, that all knowledge, opinions and practice in these matters, begins at home in the family.

Whenever one of our children has asked about how he/she was made we have explained, in detail, how this takes place. Although our six-year old thinks the idea is an hilarious joke and can’t wait to get a little older so we will tell him the real truth!

The moral side of the sexual act we have never taught, but have hoped by our love and respect for each other, they would learn the correct context for these actions.

This is the same approach we have used with all issues often problematic with young people. We don’t smoke or swear, and try to express ourselves clearly and succinctly. Violence is never used. We drink in moderation. We don’t tell lies.

We have always encouraged open discussion on issues and decisions relating to the family. Never taking action unless there was a consensus. At the beginning I was a little afraid this might result in a degeneration of my authority as a father, but as my wife explained, we will always be able to control, if it is ever necessary, by the power of our argument. If we cannot, then that which we will is invalid.

Fortunately our elder children were brought up in Scandinavia, where this attitude to democracy and influence is also reflected in the schools with schools councils etc. But also their developing sexuality was also treated in a non-puritanical manner, with more influence given to natural development than on suppression.

I personally believe the young, legally, should be allowed to have sex when they want. Any laws should only reflect attitudes to non-consensual sex and sex with children before the age of sexual maturity. It is, of course, incumbent on all parents to ensure a knowledge and availability of contraception, plus the dangers and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases.

Attitudes to drink can only be learnt in the family. An attitude of restraint shown by the parents will always result in the same attitude being reflected by the children regardless of what “drink laws” exist in any particular state.

It is these attitudes by example that is the key.

Whether it is knowledge, democracy and influence, the law, sex, morality, human development and drinking – if these attitudes have been shown and learnt correctly in the family – then regardless of what actual age states may permit certain rights to be exerted – all should be able to exercise these rights with responsibility when the time comes.

Excellent post Thomas and excellent quote. I'm a bit dubious about the quote "I personally believe the young, legally, should be allowed to have sex when they want". I understand the point your making but it could, potentially, open the doors to the Paedophile's being let off on a Technicality.

Not really. I believe my sentence covers that area:

Any laws should only reflect attitudes to non-consensual sex and sex with children before the age of sexual maturity.

Last night, my missus was reading a Thai comic book called "seventeen".

In it, there were comic character sex scenes between students.

You all talk of attitudes by examples... :o

Taoism: shit happens

Buddhism: if shit happens, it isn't really shit

Islam: if shit happens, it is the will of Allah

Catholicism: if shit happens, you deserve it

Judaism: why does this shit always happen to us?

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

I think kids should understand anatomy, puberty, pregnancy, homosexuality, birth contgrol, orgasms, and STD's before the age of 12, before it can happen to them.

Voting age is strictly a political opinion. 18 is good.

Back to the OP: in some states of the USA, married teenagers acquire their legal majority upon marriage. My daughter was an adult at 16.

SHOULD teenagers have sex? Silly question; they do have sex, starting with theirselves. None of my six kids was a virgin at the marriage altar, even though their parents were.
