mario299 Posted January 22, 2011 Share Posted January 22, 2011 Ran into a few problems trying to introduce card games in that everything that related to playing cards related to gambling, which is a no-no in our home (for the wife...she dislikes gambling...very keenyow). We play one on one (11 cards each) and it seems I’m getting pretty good at it and she’s just about ready to introduce me to her friends so we can play 4 people (7 cards each) without her running the risk of losing face because of the dumb falang who don’t know how to play cards. I find it’s a great game and the gambling makes it even more interesting. In my experience, Thai's love to play cards....errr....gamble. And it is Thai Lummy they play...along with some other games that I have not mastered. Even though I'm from Vegas, I don't like to gamble...errr...lose money. Which I always do if I gamble!!!! Like Charlie from two and 1/2 men says...."I'd gamble on rabbits if you could get them organized!" I think that sums up a whole bunch of Thais! Wifey plays cards with the other Thai gals here in our moo baan. They have a great time, and it is all small money. But they could do it for hours. I just bought a dice game called center, left, right. They are lovin that game as it is pretty much a no brainer, but a lot of fun. Again, for small money. So far I haven’t met any Thais who are interested in Western type games, such as cards, monopoly or board games, including my girlfriend. Even my kids, they would rather play solo on line or contact their friends on facebook. I enjoy card games but do not gamble, play chess and stuff like that. Perhaps it`s all been overtaken by electronic computer games and the simple ways we used to entertain ourselves back in the old days has become lost and not of interest anymore. Sad but true. I can remember once in New York, my then girlfriend and a group of us played a game of strip poker. The girls lost, it was great. But these days if wanting to play this game with Thai ladies, they would probably charge 2000 baht for each garment they took off. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
meom Posted January 22, 2011 Share Posted January 22, 2011 I never played gin rummy so can’t tell really. Regarding Thai rummy if you play with two people you get 11 cards each, 5 are put aside and from the balance 25 cards the first card is opened. The idea is to make series of 3 or more cards and you can open the game with a card from the balance 25. For example 6 of spades is the open card and you have 7& 8 of spades in your hand so you can open the game with 6,7 &8. Because you open with the first card you right away win whatever value you have decided upon before you start the game(20 baht or whatever). If you cannot make a combination with 6 then you not open but take a card from the balance and then throw away one card which becomes part of the open stack after which it’s the other parties turn. Important cards are for example 2 deuce and queen of spades which have a predetermined value of their own, for example 50 baht. If you play these cards the other party have to pay 50 baht. If one of these cards is the first card and you play it then you win double so hundred baht. There’s a lot of variations possible so I can’t really explain all here and best would be to start playing with some Thai girl, most of whom are familiar with this game.
