Cheer in a bottle

BANGKOK: -- Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Co Ltd, maker of premium beer brand Heineken, will launch a new ale called “Cheer” for the low-end segment of the market, an industrial source said yesterday.

The new beer will be launched in the next few months, he said. Cheer will compete with market leaders in the low-end segment such as Leo beer from Boonrawd Brewery and Archa beer from Beer Thai (1991) Co Ltd, also the producer of Chang beer.

Leo beer is now selling at all retail stores at between Bt38 and Bt40 for 630-ml bottles and Bt25 for 330-ml bottles. Leo is also available in cans at Bt25.

The launch of Cheer beer will allow Thai Asia Pacific Brewery to cover all segments. Heineken, its flagship beer, targets premium beer drinkers, while Tiger beer is positioned in the standard beer segment and serves medium-income customers who prefer quality

Is the cheap stuff brewed any differently from the Premium?

All Thai beer tastes the same to me.

Thats a question for the beer-snobs out there, whose idea of being 'High Class' is to order a bottle of Klosters.

Ah well.... I'll give it a try... The best way to gauge a beer is by the hangover the next day, so It's a good excuse for a session.. :o

Where did Carlsberg Beer go? Were they thrown out of Thailand or did they pull out?

I mean, it is a huge market to pull out from :o:D

Doesn't anyone else think that "Cheer" is a crap name for a beer... ? :D

totster  :D

Yep,

Do you think they meant to call it "Cheers" but as Thais don't usually pronounce the "S" the Marketing Dept didn't spell it right :o:D

I'm still waiting for San Migugel, sorry about the spelling.  It's one of the best beers in the world and soon to be here.  Blue Ice and Red Horse here already, same brewery.

its ok... after several bottles of San Miguel, I used start asking for

"San Miguuugel, errrr.. San Migiigel... errr... San Migilee...uhhh... San Miiglelano?

uuhh... San Magoo??

ohh to heck with it... just give me a beer... it's the only brand you stock anyway"

:o

ohhh... the wasted memories of a wasted youth in Subic Bay.... :D

In another "cheapie beer" thread we compared prices and the original post mentions 25 B for Leo cans! That is 7-11 prices and not normal retail.

Cheepie beers (Tesco lotus prices 16th August looking at single cans only):

Beer Thai: 17.50 B

REd Horse: 19.50 B

Leo: 19.50 B

Chang: 20 B

(I did not find Archa but believe Beer Thai level?).

Blue Ice jumps the price to 26 B/can (Tiger level?) - so they will be compeeding there if they price it at 25 B/can.

I bought a few of each of the cheapies in order to pick my favorite but have unfortunately been drinking them with friends not having a chance to do my own "blind tasting" (will I go blind?).

Leo was nice though, and the Red horse strong (6.9%) but nice too.

Cheers!

I believe you mean "Thai Beer" brand... which btw has a decent taste for a thai beer and a good high alcohol content level. The highest available prior to the San Miguel entrants.

I believe "Beer Thai" is the unofficial name for Singha Beer.

At least that's been my experience when trying to ask for one at an establishment.

John; you are ofcourse correct (the advertising campaigns must have worked on me!). Strength says 6.5% on the can, Chang and Blue Ice (San Miguel) 6.4% with Red Horse (by San Miguel as you mention) strongest at 6.9%.

The Thai Beer have not been tried yet, but the price is certainly friendly (2 beers for $1 and still money for the bus home)! :o

I have decided to invite a few friends over tonight and will try to line up all the cheapie beers (again... :D ) and do the tasting. It will be a blind tasting in order to take some of the "emotions" out of it, and I will report the result here.

I encourage others to do the same and will then make a poll here for people that have actually tried them all: Thai Beer, Archa, Chang, Leo, Red Horse.

Cheers!
