Cremation Proceedures, Prayers, Amulets

Featured Replies

My father in America is dying of advanced cancer.

I personally am closer to Buddhism than he, but he expects (wants) to be cremated. What, traditionally, is included in the cremation process in the form of written prayers, symbols, or other effects to speed and comfort the soul?

I would like to send something, if it is appropriate, in respect to Buddhism, that will show his (my) respect to The Lord Buddha. What would that be?

Thanks

I only can say what I did when my mother died (89 years) in a catholic village of the black forest in Germany.

Cremation is o.k. The urn with the ashes was exposed in the funerals hall, together with a photo of my mother.

We (with my son and his best friend, all Buddhists) played a Buddhist Chanting and recited together in Pali, My daughter recited of

The Little Prince (Exupery) the last words of the "dying little Prince". Then a little girl 10 years old said hello in the words of the Dalai Lhama.

We finished with the Chant of Metta.

There are no special rituals. You love your father and you will give him the best by your love.

It's not the ritual by itself.

Do everything that your father can die with a smile, the ritual after is secondary.
