THE SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY MINISTRY IS PILOTING RFID MICROCHIP TECHNOLOGY IN ANIMALS

The Ministry of Science and Technology is piloting animal registration via RFID microchips at Chulalongkorn (จุฬาลงกรณ์) University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, in developing a prototype farm to accommodate the country's goal of becoming the kitchen of the world.

Science and Technology Minister Prawit Rattanapien (ประวิช รัตนเพียร) inspected the progress of RFID microchip utilization in the registration of animals, as well as the farm management system, at the student training centre in Nakhon Pathom, belonging to Chulalongkorn University's Faculty of Veterinary Medicine. He said afterwards that the RFID technology, which provides information by using radio frequencies, was brought into use for registering animals, keeping history on raising, healing, and preventing the spread of disease, as well as for using the technology to help in managing farms via IT.

The Science and Technology Ministry is also preparing to implement radio frequency identification on Thai shrimp products to prevent trade discrimination.

Minister Prawit said the RFID chips will be used to display the origin of the goods, and prevent claims from third parties, as well as reduce trade barriers. He also believes the implementation of the technology will help increase the potential of Thai food products, as well as help increase confidence from trade partners.
