2011-02-23 23:37:08 GMT+7 (ICT)

IBIZA (BNO NEWS) -- A dozen people were injured on Wednesday after being stabbed by a man armed with a machete and an iron bar in the town of Sant Antoni in the Spanish island of Ibiza, local newspaper Diario de Ibiza reported.

Local police have arrested the alleged assailant, a 41-year-old Moroccan living in the town.

The incident occurred at a supermarket around 13.15 pm, when several employees of the establishment called the attention of the man who was allegedly stealing, according to a witness. The man assaulted a cashier, and two other employees, before running away. He then stabbed a number of people indiscriminately in nearby streets.

The victims were taken to the hospital, but their identities are not yet known. According to the Spanish news agency EFE, one of the most serious victims who was wounded in the neck is being operated. Some of the injured have already been discharged.

Medical sources said the number of victims could be up to thirteen. The government of Sant Antoni has called a press conference to report the facts, according to the newspaper.

Ibiza, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, attracts large numbers of young tourists every year.
