One protester killed in Yemen, lawmakers resign

SANAA (BNO NEWS) -- At least one civilian was killed and another wounded on Thursday when a bomb exploded during a southern separatist march in Lawder district in Abyan province, the Yemen Post reported.

Private sources said that unidentified people put a bomb in Al-Dayri Street which targeted the rally. No more details were reported.

Meanwhile, Faud Dhaba, a Yemeni parliament member of the Islamic party Islah, announced on Wednesday his resignation from the Yemeni parliament and joined the protests.


Dhaba, considered the first parliament member to resign from the House of Representatives, attributed his resignation to the failure of the parliament in offering positive chances for Yemeni people.


Eight lawmakers from Yemen's ruling party, General People's Congress, also submitted their resignations on Wednesday in part to protest the violence that anti-government demonstrators have faced, according to CNN.

Thousands continue to protest across Yemen calling for President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down.

At least two anti-government protesters were killed and eight others wounded on Tuesday when supporters of Saleh, armed with daggers and batons, clashed with protesters in Sanaa.

An official source at the Cabinet said on Wednesday that a committee was formed to investigate the accident, affirming that the perpetrators will be punished in accordance with law, the state-run Saba news agency reported.

Medical officials have said 11 people have been killed in protests this month.

Protesters, mostly young, are fighting against soaring unemployment rates, poverty, widespread corruption and patronage. The demonstrations were initially inspired by the Tunisian revolt, but they gathered momentum with the success of Egypt's revolution.

President Saleh, who has been in power since 1978, pledged earlier this month not to seek his reelection in 2013 or hand over power to his son.
