Regarding subtle difference in meaning, I am sometimes bothered with the application of classifiers (and also demonstratives) in a noun phrase. Can anyone point out my mistakes (or confirm the acceptability) in the following sentences?

1 ลูกของผมนี้ไม่เคยร้องเพลง 'My child has never sung a song' (strongly implying that he is very different from OTHER children)

2 ลูกของผมไม่เคยร้องเพลง 'My child has never sung a song' (implying that he is different from other children)

3 ลูกผมไม่เคยร้องเพลง 'My child has never sung a song' (a common statement)

Moreover, do I unknowingly leave out some elements in the verb phrase? Many thanks.

The only mistake i can see in these 3 sentences is in number 1 which i think needs a classifier like this,

ลูกของผมคนนี้ไม่เคยร้องเพลง

because you have used นี้ it should be preceded by a classifier .

With regards to their different meanings, again i think only number one has a different meaning. By that, i mean that in number one there is more than one of your children present and you're pointing that one out as the one who hasn't sung a song before.

The other two sentences have the same meaning.

Thanks! As for No.2 and No.3, I thought if we use ของ we might change the meaning from 'my child' to 'that child of mine'. I thought there would be 'subtle' difference if we do so.

You may be right, i'm not sure and my grammar book's at school so maybe someone else can help with some input. As far as i can remember though...

ลูกของผมคนนี้ this child of mine

ลูกของผมคนนั้น that child of mine

ลูกผม or ลูดของผม i would take as the same meaning with the ของ dropped because words are often dropped in speech when they are deemed unnecessary.

Yes. Classifiers are not always obligatory, esp. when referring to kinship terms. Thanks.

I think that a classifier could be used to show number which is its prime purpose but without it is 'one in number' assumed?

If you left out คน, since all it is doing is identifiing a person already identified by ของผม what would be the effect?

Would it mean that one in number could not be assumed?

ลูกผมนี้ไม่เคยร้องเพลง
