BANGKOK:-- The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) will change the addresses of more than 1,400,000 housing units in the capital.

“The new system will make it easier to find housing units based on their address,” deputy Bangkok city clerk Talod Jaroonrat said yesterday.

He said the change would cost BMA nearly Bt70 million as old direction signs would have to be replaced. Talod said the changes would begin next month and should be completed by February.

BANGKOK: -- Issuing of numerical addresses for all homes and streets in 35 districts in Bangkok will begin next month, deputy city clerk Talord Charoonrat said yesterday. The new system, costing 69 million baht and covering 1.4 million households, is aimed at making mail delivery and finding homes easier, he said.

In practice, there will be no moo, which is based on a village system of addresses.

Each house will be given an address number according to its location on the street in numerical order. Houses on the left side of the street will be odd numbers, and those on the right even numbers.

Roads and sois will also be given numbers, such as Phetkasem 1 or 3. Houses in a soi will have their number following a hyphen, such as Phetkasem 1-1.

The change should be completed by February, Mr Talord said. Changes in the remaining 15 districts would begin in 2007, after the city council elections.

Residents who refuse to change their home address will face a small fine.

Administration division chief Somsak Kongmak said districts will issue documents to confirm the new addresses.

``People can use the document when contacting state agencies,'' he said.

There is no need for residents to change ID cards, as the city had already upgraded its database system.

Ahhh, yet another salient point. Just how many sois are there in Bangkok? Anybody influential have a cousin in the sign-making business?

In the US I think that in some states these kind of signs are made in prisons....time for another war on something to beef up the prison work force....

I would imagine that the potential in Thailand for some well-connected, third-party sign shop to do this work at marked-up prices trumps using "free" prison labour.

THE BMA IS MODIFYING HOUSE NUMBERS IN THE GREATER BANGKOK AREA

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is overhauling all house numbers in the greater Bangkok area.

BMA Deputy Permanent Secretary Talod Jaroonrat (ตลอด จรูญรัตน์) revealed that all house numbers in the 35 greater Bangkok districts, totalling 1,428,290 houses, will be adjusted. Numbering will now involve the road and soi (ซอย) system, while the mu (หมู่) system has been abolished. This is to facilitate the international standard, and to ease finding houses, as well as aid data collection. The new arrangement will especially yield benefits in preparing for elections, in designating voting units, as well as in making the list of eligible voters.

The BMA will call home owners to bring in their house's registration, in order for adjustment. This is expected to be completed by February next year, before the senatorial election in April. Mr. Talod said that although the changes will involve all house numbers in the area, no complications will be caused for the public, as district officials will automatically adjust the residential registrations and a notifying letter on the changes will be sent to people afterwards. As for I.D. cards, the cards will be able to be used as normal.

Mr. Somsak Khongmak (สมศักดิ์ คงมาก), the director of the registrations bureau of the BMA's Office of the Permanent Secretary, said the project to modify the house numbers has used 69 million baht.
