Israeli warplanes raid Gaza, no casualties

2011-03-07 00:15:22 GMT+7 (ICT)

GAZA (BNO NEWS) -- The Israeli Air Force carried out a number of air strikes on the Gaza strip at dawn on Sunday, causing only damage, the Palestine News Network reported.

F16 fighter jets fired missiles on lands in al Zeiytoun neighborhood east of Gaza City, causing sustained damage to nearby homes. Air raids also targeted a number of construction buildings which belong to the Islamic University of Gaza City, the building site used to be the Israeli settlement of Netzarim which was evacuated during the Israeli disengagement plan of 2005.

The IDF Spokesperson said tunnels, which were used to smuggle terrorists into Israel, were targeted along with other two terrorist targets. He added that the attacks were in response to the two Kassam rockets fired from the Strip earlier Saturday, the Jerusalem Post reported.

Recently, the region has witnessed an escalation of rocket attacks against Israel and Israeli air attacks against Gaza. During the month of February, Israeli attacks on the Gaza Strip killed seven Palestinians and left 46 injured, the Ministry of Health in Gaza reported last week.
