Mister Fixit Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 As a Brit in BKK, can anyone tell me if there is anywhere which does a Bonfire Night party this November 5th? If there is more than one, does anyone have any recommendation as to the best?

monsieurhappy Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 You can have a "Big Bang" any night, why wait till November!
sbk Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Guy Fawkes was hanged, drawn and quartered for attempting to blow up Parliament with barrels of gunpowder under the House of Lords back in 1607. For some odd reason, the British celebrate his capture on Nov 5th with fireworks and bonfires.

Most people would have said 'hung, drawn ... etc'.

And I'm STILL waiting for a reply about the subject ...

Thanks! One of my pet peeves is the misuse of the word "hanged". That and "impact".

Morden Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 I've not heard of Guy Fawkes Night being celebrated anywhere ourside of England. Great idea though! The Thais will happily celebrate anything so I guess that they just have to be told about it and you've got a bonfire. They like big fireworks too I hear. It's my birthday that day so I would be up for a night out but, sadly, I shall be in the UK. Good luck - and enjoy!
Totster Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Hmmmm Oxtail soup and pig roast!!! <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Not forgetting roast chestnuts... totster
edd Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 Now let’s be serious. You can not have Bonfire Night without potatoes in the fire and a bag of sticky Bonfire toffee.
Abandon Posted September 16, 2005 Posted September 16, 2005 what about Toffee Apples ?? my big night when I was growing up, was November 4th - which was when me and my mate would sneak through all the gardens and light the bonfires that folk had prepared ... what about 'impact' ???

sbk Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 Dr pp, I believe he was hanged in 1607, but caught in 1605?
dr_Pat_Pong Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 Caught Nov 5 1605 Executed Jan 31 1606 ( Google is my friend )
sbk Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 Oh well, I got mine off some british Guy Fawkes website. What do they know! Anyway, why do the British celebrate this poor guys death? I mean, really all he was trying to do was shake up the system abit.
dr_Pat_Pong Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 I think that the Brits really want to perpetuate his memory for at least trying to rid the place of parliament
Mister Fixit Posted September 17, 2005 Author Posted September 17, 2005 I think that the Brits really want to perpetuate his memory for at least trying to rid the place of parliament <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That's right. It demonstrates the British people's healthy disrespect for Parliament.
Rumpole Posted September 17, 2005 Posted September 17, 2005 Pity he's not still around. We have work for him.

Actually, the only bonfires we have out in Suphanburi are those who are burning their trash!
