Is there a Non-0 visa category that allows a foreign Dad (under 50) to reside in Thailand while taking care of his Thai child ?

Yes, why not look in the pinned topics section, see the attached link. http://www.immigrati...777-2551_en.pdf

It appears Items 2.11 or 2.18 would apply to your situatuion for one year "Extensions of Stay" if you have the Non-immigrant "O" Visa already. I would ask at the nearest consulate as to what they require to issue the "O" Visa.

I'll look for more specific posts from others in a similar situation.

Other items that may apply, found by using the search function..

I have a friend that doesn't qualify for any other visa other than having a Thai dependent. He goes to KL to get a tourist visa, then extends in country for a 2 month period at a time at immigration.

I take it OP you are not married to the mother, or if you were, you would easily qualify for a Non O visa by showing income, marriage docs etc. in KL.

2.18 In the case of a family

member of a Thai(applicable only to parents, spouse, child, adopted child or child

of his/her spouse):

Permission will be

granted for a period of

not more than 1 year at a time.

(1) The alien has obtained a temporary visa (NON-IM)

(2) Proof of family relationship

(5) In the case of a parent, one of parents must have an average annual income of not less than 40,000 baht per month or a money deposit of not less than 400,000 baht for expenses within a year.

Providing you are the Legal Father of the Child.

For the extension of stay it is required that you are the legal father of the child. To get a non-O visa being on the birth certificate is enough.

Look here for information about becoming the legal father if not married to te mother:

In case 5 above, when showing the monthly income, does the income have to be going into a Thai bank account? Or can it be in a foreign bank account with a letter obtained from the embassy?

Thanks.

Depends on the immigrations officer.

Normally this is proven with tax receipts for taxes paid in Thailand.

With income statement from embassy the income must not show that money comes from work.

That would mean that you work illegally in Thailand.

So would a bank statement from an overseas business that I own suffice?

No, only embassy letter.
