Male Foreigners Over 50 Outlawed From Marrying Cambodian Women

Hmmm that'll mark Cambodia off many people's lists now (and add it to a few others!) "Sorry doll, I can't marry you as I am over 50!" That could be their new tourism slogan!

I have been telling Thai girls that it is illegal for me to marry them because I am over 40 and Scottish - Cambodia sounds good in a couple of more years, no need to bullshit !

The law has some merit. I for one am sickened by what I see here in Thailand all too often. Some old dude cruzing around with his young 20 something bride and the little baby in tow. Which I might add that baby inevitably grows up without a father after he turns over from old age . And men enslaving thier 'wives' as prostitutes in thier homeland is another problem.

However it also has some laughable conditions. $2550 per month is a joke.If a Cambodian was on $2550k a month they would be in the high society group in Phnom Phen. Also the age thing should be adjusted to an age differential as opposed to the 'cannot marry' for over 50 year olds. So what they are saying is that a 51 year old foriegner wants to marry a 49 year old Khmer then that it against the law. Please.

The law has merit you say and then you rip the whole thing apart...and as for the old dudes with the kids in tow, how do you know the kids have not been provided for after said 'old dude' has popped his clogs.....most kids outlive their parents

You obviously fit the bill. Being provided for is one thing. But growing up from a young age without a father is hard for a child.

That said. In my post I did say it has merit. I didn't say it was flawless, good or bad. It does how ever have good points and bad points.

How many Thai kids grow up without a father ? and are not provided for, have a guess ..............................go on, dare ya !

Or looking it from a different angle, how many young Thai mothers have loyal Thai husbands. There must be millions of girls with kids but papa has done a runner , it seems to be the norm in Thailand.

The foreigners are a very small percentage in the 'business' that we see in Asia. Thailand might be famous for this in the western world, but most of Asia is like this, and it mainly caters for local men. I don't condone it or agree with it, basically I am saying its like this, and it ain't going to change because we complain about it.

Thus it begs the question why the Cambodians have done this? I just think they don't like to see old farangs with young ladies. Really this is just racism (or ageism?), despite all the wealth this type of tourism brings in, and the economic impact it has on the young ladies and their families. In a way it will be hurting these people too. Certainly their measures won't have the impact of human trafficking that they talk about.

This also re-enforces the point, no country can be called home unless they allow you citizens rights. Otherwise you can be excluded from residing for whatever reasons they want (old/wrinkly/fat/decrepit/pollute the visual landscape).

And you young farangs complaining about the old farangs: one day you will be old/fat/wrinkled/etc too (and I bet you will still visit here to enjoy Thailand?). Me I am somewhere in between.

I am sure i read somewhere that it is to protect young Cambodian girls from being enticed to Korea to marry old men who mistreat them once they are married. It was never meant to apply to the average farang in Cambodia, but is typical of pollies in the area, using a sledgehammer to crack a nut. They are not capable of thinking through the eventual consequences as we often see in Thailand with their 'hair brained' ideas.

Do you ever hear the word Thailand outside of Thailand without some snickering joke being made about prostitutes? <_<

Yes, I do. If you don't then that would say more about where you hang out and who you hang out with than it does about Thailand :)

Yes, I do. If you don't then that would say more about where you hang out and who you hang out with than it does about Thailand :)

Here is an example. I was watching the Oscar winning Best Picture film The Departed.

A funny line was "Last I heard he was happily married to a 13 year old boy on a beach in Thailand".

More often than not, when Thailand is mentioned, it's always to make a joke about ping pong balls or love you long time or pedophilia.

In your opinion, what is Thailand best known for throughout the world?

Now, I think that it is unfair for the gov to regulate who gets married to whom but at the same time I can understand that Cambodians are prideful and don't want the international image as a "Wife Factory". It's a touchy subject and I have sympathy for both sides.

i know i'm setting myself up to get flamed now, but i kinda think this is a good thing. obviously the govt wants to prevent old men marrying young girls for the wrong reasons. while they may not be forced to marry them, what do you expect when you go from having nothing to everything in terms of relativity....

Just a thought: who marries who for the wrong reason? The old guys usually really like the young girl... while the young lady usually only likes the old guy's bank account.

What happens if the woman is over 50? Does she have to find someone under 50 if she wants to marry a foreigner?

Foreigners who earn less than $2,550 per month are also barred from wedding local women, foreign ministry spokesman Koy Kuong told AFP, but the restrictions do not apply to weddings taking place overseas.

When the c...t is 50+ the government will pay you $2,150 a month.

Relax internet tough guy. I am not the one making the jokes. I am simply observing that perhaps Cambodia does not want the same reputation as Thailand.

Why is it that so many of the western women get so steamed up about the topic of seeing ugly middle-aged western men in a relationship with young, usually beautiful and usually more compliant Asian women?

You would surely expect the western women to be delighted that all the ugly fat balding western men have gone to Asia looking for comfort in Asian arms. This leaves the field much clearer so that only the tall handsome romantic desirable young attractive men are left in the west for them to have. Why is this not enough to make them content? After all, they already have the money from the divorce settlements....

In your opinion, what is Thailand best known for throughout the world?

Food

Boxing

Buddhism

Beaches/vacations

sex

In that order, If the order is changed it will reflect the demographic if the participants. An example from a movie making fun of someone is hardly indicative of how the "world" sees Thailand. To use some of farang000999's logic they mentioned prostitution in The Pink Panther, that must mean that the world thinks Paris is only about prostitution.

The last time I was back in the US, when I was around average folks that learned where I lived the first topic was invariably food. When I was around people at the gym it was Muay Thai. When I was around my friends from Iliff it was Buddhism. When I was around younger folks it was beaches (and the movie The Beach ) and the costs of travel in Thailand and SEAsia. When I was around guys old enough to have been in the Vietnam war it was sex (I am too young to fit that demographic but only by about a decade). Put it all together and it was bitter old guys that put sex first and average people (any age any gender) that put food first. Jocks put Muay Thai first etc etc

The only person that disappointed me was someone that I used to date (white, 2 years younger than me, still a bit angry that I broke it off) with his remarks about Thai guys, I shut him down quickly enough with showing him pics of my BF at work (Senior IT security guy for a major bank) :)

It's because they want us to be as sad and lonely as they are.

No point in getting the money if the guy doesn't really care and is happy to have escaped at any cost.

(Only speaking about my former in the UK by the way)

She got the house, the kids, and a lot of the pension.

I got a new wife half my age and a new baby on the way.

Happy ...... you bet I am!

Surely the age barrier is a minority in human trafficking, not a majority percentage or is Cambodia in its usual witch hunting corruption, stating the majority of marriages over 50's is connected with human trafficking? What a croc and how absurd in a country still hiding in fear of reprisal from Khmer. Perhaps they need to establish an "Inquisition" and public floggings into anyone interested in marrying a Cambodian when over the age of 50. Cambodia is still in the Dark Ages.

You can't be happy all your life - you have to get married sooner or later! I waited until 53 and have a wonderful 33 year old Thai wife (at the time) and 2 great kids now. Maybe I'm not normal... it has been said! blink.gif Thank God I didn't chose a Cambodian girl!

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMM .... I turn 68 tomorrow and my Thai wife turns 60 in May. If we were not already married, would she be considered to young to be married to an old man like me, and I would be to old to marry in Cambodia? Three cheers for the US and Thailand as I have not sold the wife into slavery (yet lol) and we are very happy together. I personally think governments should address the abusers and not the innocents, as one shoe does not fit all. What is wrong with younger women finding some older men more mature, stable an loyal? Notice I interjected the word "some." Frankly speaking, I would not want a child bride, as I have raised my children already.

I would say that overall, older men treat their young wives better than young guys. It's the young girls who normally marry for the wrong reasons, not the older guys. This will actually protect a lot of older guys from themselves.

These laws are helping the foreigners, not the Cambodians. The lawmakers don't have a clue.

Certainly does, but no better or worse reputation than Thailand for that sort of thing, and rightfully so.

FYI, Glitter was visiting Thailand long before he settled in Cambodia, but Cambodia took action and permanently deported him. Overall I would say Cambodia is visibly more proactive than Thailand in discouraging those types of visitors and helping people report any abuse should they come across it. Indeed, given the level of development of both countries and a proper comparison what's Thailand's excuse this time?

Exactly, he wasn't joking man. I think he was making the comment that the international image is that a man with a Thai woman is also with a prostitute. Sorry if it offends you, but this image does exist. I'm married to a Thai woman as well, with a son, but I don't take offense to this comment. It's just the way it is and, hey, look around. There are a lot of prostitutes and ladyboys for that matter. whistling.gif
