Downpours Trigger Landslide in South

Heavy rain in the Bantad mountain range has triggered a landslide at a waterfall in Phatthalung province.

Heavy rain in the Bantad mountain range in Phatthalung province has caused a landslide at Praiwan waterfall while many tourists were playing in the water.

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Forest rangers found large trees toppled all along the side of the waterfall.

They suspected that heavy rain over the area and water pipes that were recently laid to bring in tap water to neighboring villages caused the landslide.

Currently, a warning has been issued and access to Praiwan waterfall is prohibited.

Heavy rain also flooded farming areas in Nakhon Sawan province.

Elseshere, farmers have been forced to sell their rice at a low price of 5,000 baht per ton due to a high level of moisture in the grains caused by ongoing thunderstorms.

Thank god for Global Warming. We can blame it for just about everything and anything.

(BTW, global warming is a fact. What is less of a fact is the effect and why we have global warming.)

Hey we gotta blame something now that Bush is gone!

A major debate is raging across the developed world as to whether global warming (man-made or not) is a reality or not. But luckily someone at the weather centre in Thailand has the definitive answer.

Amusing Thailand.

There is no major debate about climate change. It is an accepted scientific fact.

Some businesses and political interest groups are trying to produce a debate for their own benefit, but almost all scientific evidence shows that we are changing the earth's climate by releasing large amounts of carbon into the atmosphere.

Yep.

I realize weather is basically the same in Thailand -except for the dry and wet season and the temperatures varying within a range of 10 degrees, but in other parts of the world, one day you can be wearing summer wear and the next thing you know, you need to wear a jacket for a couple days. Just because Thailand gets a couple days of "cooler" weather doesn't mean that it is due to global warming. If it lasts a month, then maybe. Here, I thought the rainy season had arrived a month earlier. Why doesn't the Thai weather men (scientists??) blame it on the earthquake in Japan. Blame it on the earth's axis being wobbled.

I watched the weather forecast from BBC World News last Saturday morning and already at that point the forecaster said something like "it's now 30 degrees in Bangkok but Wednesday will see record low temperatures for March" and blamed it on a cold front from China.

I told several friends and we all had a good laugh on Monday when it was so hot.

For once the weather men were spot on (ok maybe a day off).

Global warming causes cold weather?

Did the onset of the Ice Age signal rising warmer temperatures?

Does rain cause things to get wet?

Is snow really cold to the touch or does it just feel that way?

Is the sun really yellow or does it just seem that way because people haven't stared at it long enough?

why is orange jam called marmalade?

it isnt it it called apricot.

The whole issue isn't so much about 'Global Warming' these days.

They changed the goal posts a few years ago to 'Climate Change' as they realised that maybe 'Global Warming' tied their hands a little too much

The truth is that while Mankind may or may not have contributed to 'Climate Change' weather patterns have shifted throughout history.

I'd like to know what the lowest recorded temperature for Bangkok in March is though.

If you cast your memory back quite a few years before global warming it was the whole in the ozone layer that was going to destroy mankind, funny how they dont talk about that anymore?

It's not fact, it's religion .......... BURN all heretics!

Well put Sir.

I get fed up with these businessmen forcing their 'facts' about climate change down out throats just so more people donate to their 'charities'.

What kind of person actually believes that they control the climate?

I think Ming the Merciless off of Flash Gordon had a weather control thingumybob...

Sorry, but it was always like that before. Even when there wasn't "The man made Global warming.":jap:

Brought back out the blankets and heaters last night. We have SNOW in the foothills around Chiang Mai.

happens almost every year, ( called seasons) and every year some news makes it sound like a rare phenomenon

Why would Thailand be affected by global warming? Didn't a Thai academic proclaim that melting icecaps would not affect Thailand because of its distance from the north and south pole? :whistling:

Maybe because the more or less world-wide ban on CFC's actually worked?

Whenever I see some “Beardie” environmentalist on BBC, CNN or wherever solemnly proclaiming that temperature in China / Europe / USA (wherever) has risen .87 degrees (whatever) over the last 120 - 1,000 years (whatever) I now realise, for example:

Tut Angh Khamoon

Davie Crockett

Lao Tsu

Boudiccia

Eric the Red

Krull the Conqueror (OK, maybe not him!)

That all these people had the technology to measure the temperature of the Earth so precisely, at their time of existence, and record it so that our present day Scientists can show us exactly how much the Earth is “warming” over the Centuries is truly amazing to me.

Doesn't seem that far-fetched that global warming could be to blame (if indeed there is such a thing).

Warming effect somewhere could be producing relative pressure differences which could be sucking cooler air from the North.

Yes and this season is called 'hot'

Carbon dioxide increase is the result of temperature increase. Boyle's law. The earth goes in cycles, and now the cycle is in a cooling phase. I remember deep cold in the '60's that forced farmers to move orange groves south in Florida.

Not all research has been valid, a lot has been to "hide the decline". Garbage in, garbage out the computer models don't have enough history to make good predictions, even for a week.

Satellite data shows consistent calibration errors and using "regional" (i.e. 1 recording station) for a 20,000 km area is crazy, especially when there are altitude differences.

If there is going to be any valid science, the current data needs to be flushed and the whole process restarted, with real peer review, not "cherry picking" the ones that match personal beliefs.

If we believe we can affect the climate, we are considering ourselves to be gods. I sincerely doubt we have that kind of power.

It is a rare achievement that people actually worked together to get something done! The peak of the depleation was in 2006 and has been on the mend since.

Severe depletion of the Antarctic ozone layer was first observed in the early 1980s. The international response embodied in the Montreal Protocol. Today 196 parties worldwide have signed the Montreal Protocol which is widely regarded as the most successful Multinational Environmental Agreement and it is the first treaty achieving universal ratification.

Furthermore, the phasing out of ozone depleting substances (ODS) has helped to fight climate change since many ODS are also powerful greenhouse gases.

While the Montreal Protocol has made great strides in the global effort to protect the ozone layer, the task is far from being complete. Despite all efforts substantial recovery of the ozone layer is not expected before the middle of the 21st century.

Incorrect.

The FACT of global warming has never been under debate by most of the conservative right and pro-business groups. I know. I am one of them.

It is the CAUSE we debate. Al Gore and the greenies and radial left environmentalist would have scientists (real scientists and not UN or US liberal scientists for sale) forget global warming happened many times in the past, for reasons that had NOTHING to do with humanity. That temperature history also shows the sea change levels and temperature changes are hardly out of range for past temperature changes.

There is no way to know if and when the global warming will cease to continue rising, if it will drop again, if we will all be fine, or if we will all be dead.

The debate is simply this. Conservatives (myself included) simply state it is both hubris and factually incorrect to think we (humanity) could even impact the earth in alleged fashion. Look at the numbers vs the kind and amount of pollution mankind creates.

It does not support this as "the reason" for global warming.

Just live and let it be. If we didn't cause it, don't fall into another trap of thinking we can even stop it. The earth revolves around the sun, and we live by the whims of the earth and not vice versa. Don't get all liberal leftist OCD and think you can be a control freak with nature....nature wins every time whatever you try to do ---- Haiti, Chile, Japan, Katrina/USA.....

This is part of the problem, no facts to show global warming, satellite data shows just the opposite.

Yet another intelligent announcement by a Thai specialist in something or another .

Could the earth being knocked out of whack a couple of inches by the force of the earthquake have anything to do with this freaky weather change , maybe just a coincidental happening . The moon has an influence on tides and weather , I normally see it just looking up from my balcony , last night I had to lean over the rail to find it , it was still up there how-ever .

I agree. The moon effects the tide. Although the moon also effects the untide :whistling:

Thai logic...180 degrees out. My Thai wife uses the same logic to arrive at many of her own conclusions about life. Maybe someone from the government should read this new book, "Climate Coup" Thai's love coup's anyway.

marmalade

1480, from M.Fr. marmelade, from Port. marmelada "quince jelly, marmalade," from marmelo "quince," by dissimilation from L. melimelum "sweet apple," originally "fruit of an apple tree grafted onto quince," from Gk. melimelon, from meli "honey" + melon "apple." Extended 17c. to "preserve made from citrus fruit."form the Online Etymology Dictionary. At least I can help you with that one :)
