Yemen's president sacks government

2011-03-21 02:41:23 GMT+7 (ICT)

SANAA (BNO NEWS) -- Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh on Sunday fired his government, the state-run news agency SABA reported.

The presidential decree asked the cabinet to be a caretaker until a new government is formed.

The announcement comes after several ministers and Yemen's ambassador to the United Nations resigned after 52 protesters, who were calling for the resignation of President Saleh, were killed by security forces on Friday.

President Saleh declared Sunday a national day of mourning for the "martyrs of democracy," who have fallen at the University of Sanaa or in other provinces of the country. Funerals were held for some of the people killed in the attacks, with bodies of the victims carried through the streets.

Yemeni protesters have been demanding the resignation of Saleh for the past two months. President Saleh has pledged not to seek his reelection in 2013 or hand over power to his son.
