Six more arrested in Sri Lanka cricket team attack

2011-03-30 08:29:19 GMT+7 (ICT)

LAHORE, PAKISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- Pakistani police said Tuesday they arrested six more suspects, including the mastermind involved in the attack, for the 2009 attack on the Sri Lankan cricket team in Lahore, The News reported.

Lahore police claimed six terrorists were members of banned outfit Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan. They also seized a suicide jacket, four Kalashnikovs, eight hand grenades and 1,000 bullets of Kalashnikovs.

The six terrorists were arrested from Lahore on a tip-off provided by two other suspects, already held in connection with the attack. Six accomplices are still at large, according to The News.

Seven people were killed and several others injured, including Sri Lankan players, when militants launched a gun and grenade assault on the team as they travelled to a match in the eastern city on March 3, 2009. At least 12 gunmen were attempting to take the team hostage. After the attack, they managed to escape from the scene and continued terrorist activities in different parts of the country.

The announcement came one day before the World Cup semifinal match between arch-rivals India and Pakistan which will be attended by Prime Ministers from both nations in Mohali, India.
