Just wait 'till the Gent/B-Fly/TM etc get into this one, eh? :o

Boon Mee,

If you are a genuine full-blooded American (whatever that means) and this grouping is a result of your usual erudition and analysis; in addition, if your views on this grouping are also shared by other full-blooded Americans on Thaivisa, then - Congratulations! - you have not only reduced, what was an intelligently formulated question to the troll status you appear to fear so much, but you have, as well, correctly answered the question "Afraid of Americans?" - at least to my satisfaction.

The heading Afraid of Americans is a David Bowie song I was just useing to lighten the mood.  :o

And Bowie also said in the song that "God is an American".... :D

Huh? :D

What do you mean by "Us"?

Dispite what Hollywood, and the Republican party may wish and project to the world, not everyone in America is white.... :o

Don't be so obtuse, Thomas. You know what I'm on about here. The topic is sure-fire bait to the likes of the Gent etc. It panders to the lowest common denominator and we've been there, done that ad nauseum... :o

Two words...

Friendly Fire

:D :D  :o

Yeah, pretty much... I also agree with various other posters here... It´s not being afraid to live there. I´m sure there are beautiful places to live and wonderful people to meet as well as all the stereotypes.

I just have no interest WHATSOEVER in living there.

When I used to work in big hotels in europe, years ago, we always received a variety of international papers. In the beginning I would sit and read them all including IHT, USA today, NY times, etc... at the end of long dreary nightshifts.

Within a short time, I would only read the basketball scores in the red section of the USA; comics in the Int. Herald Tribune, and only take home a NY times magazine once a week. Otherwise stayed with the Times, The Telegraph, and of course the Sun, all of the UK. Same with TV news... I NEVER watch CNN, for more than a minute. cos it´s crap. BBC News all the time - when I have a TV.

Just no interest in the small minded-ness of information distriubution. It´s like the media (focussin only on the OP here, without the obvious expansions on this theme.) will only inform the people of "so" much without giving other perspectives, sides of any given story.

I hope that´s a little clear as to my opinion on this.

Ciao... The Big Creepy Clown.

I was hoping you would show up TM. What do you think of American media and the message it might send to the world? Do you think it would scare people people or at least make them shake their heads in confusion, like so many westerns do with LOS?

Come on BM, what are you afraid of? Surely BF, or TM doesn't scare you? Sure some are going to be pricks but not all. And the ones that are, well, they are the challenge are they not?

Ok we need to have Porkie in this thread and we will have a full clown circus :D

The problems with Americans is that they are jealous of the Brits, wants to top the elegance and superiority of the French, but they are no better than those criminals that were deported to Australia :D

(just kidding, well at least for the Australian part, Australians are cool, no need to insult them :o)

Frog bashing is a better topic - everyone hates the french!!! :o

:D

That's good too. What about Brit bashing. I know too easy so not sporty but I am always game for easy targets :D

Hmm... So much for keeping it serious... Even the Original poster can´t stay on topic... Got to get all defensive... .America Strikes Back!

Waste of time.

No country is exempt from having <deleted>, no matter which it is. Criticize all you want Americans, French or whatever. Anyone can be a jerk.

I am not saying what you hate about America BF. I am saying what does a person see in America if all the know is the news?

Kayo, what are you talking about? I am trying to keep people serious. I really want to know what people think. So, why don't you add some of your thoughts on the OP instead of adding empty Star Wars rip offs. Cool. :D

TripXCore I am not talking about people. I am talking about media and how the media effects peoples views of places they have never been or not spent alot of time in. Help me out here, I know you got something more to say. :o

ok, so to answer your question, this is what I can tell:

I think the recent perception is that America is a paranoia state that see terrorism and ennemies everywhere. A little bit like the Soviet Union in the 80s.

Another perception is that Americans think they can buy the world with oil and their worthless dollars and that they have a God right to oil (Iraq proved that theory right).

Also, nobody outside the US fails to see the hypocrisy of the US lecturing everyone about the benefits of democracy while supporting the worst dictactorships at the same time. It doesn't compute and people hate that.

Butterfy - seriously I dont think most people care one way or another.

I think many more people do care than what is healthy for the US in the long run, hence the paranoia.

More humility and reflection, less bull-headedness and gun-toting. These two qualities would significantly improve how I view America, anyway.

However, if one needs to impress the average Joe Bloke, I guess the big guns work - as long as they are not pointed at said Joe Bloke.

There is a clear discrepancy between how American popular culture has penetrated most countries of the world, and how people view the average American. Large parts of American culture are cherished and adopted - (blues, jazz, rock 'n' roll, American movies) but the average American is not viewed as somebody you admire or fear, more like somebody you find a bit too loud, a bit too self-assured and a bit too ignorant to be so loud and self-assured.

I have to stress that this is not the case with a lot of Americans I have met, as people who leave home tend to have more of an open mind than the ones who stay.

Further: Most of the rest of the world takes great offense when influential Americans say things like 'Our American way of life is not up for negotiation' (Bush the elder, Sao Paulo - I forget the year - 1990s anyway, but the statement sticks).

When you come from a country that has very little and see these statements from a representative of a country that has so much, is it any wonder you feel jealous and bitter? Would you not feel insulted when the US takes the right to refuse to follow environmental agreements everybody else signs, while at the same time placing environmental demands on poorer countries... etc.

Play fair, self-evaluate more often and don't toot your own horn too loudly - and I'll grow to like you.

Apart from all those generalisations - 300 million people is enough for you to be able to find enough like-minded people - and just as many a$$holes.

-----------------

And as for the news, everyone reads the news that best fits their education level and outlook on the world, and further filters them to make their opinions even more rigid. I am no exception.

My interpretation of what his question was is this---For all non-Americans, when you view something in the media about the US, how does it make you feel about America? Does it give you a positive or negative view of the US and why?

Is this right TBB?

Just wait 'till the Gent/B-Fly/TM etc get into this one, eh? :o

"Beware the man of one book."

--St. Thomas Aquinas

Scholastic philosopher and theologian, 1225-1274

And, likewise, anyone who make their opinions on America and Americans from only viewing Fox News, CNN or Hollywood.

I, personally, like to supplement my information from other sources such as: The Drudge Report or About (particularly the Entertainment section).

From these I can see that Americans, on the whole, are just as dumb and stupid as any other generalised national group.

The only difference being, they make so much noise and fill the airways with their opinions in such unsubtle ways, it is more than obvious, these meanings are undoubtedly in indirect proportion to their value for the rest of us.

Butterfy - seriously I dont think most people care one way or another.

I think they do. You might not but don't underestimate the "opinions" or "thinking process" of others.

No argument there, Tom.

Well, it all depends what media you use and what outlook you have on life, doesnt it?

If you are a socialist reading socialist media, you are not likely to be impressed about much coming out of the US, at least not at present, except for maybe Steve Earle, Noam Chomsky and Bad Religion (on second thoughts, maybe not even full-blooded socialists are tasteless enough to enjoy Bad Religion).

If you were a right-wing, pro-gun rights, anti-government born-again Christian following the media such people follow (Guns and Ammo and the Watchtower?), I bet you wish you lived there yourself.
