Afraid Of Americans?

Featured Replies

And don't get me wrong....the dominant culture in the US sucks even worse than how northern Thailand sucks and we know how it is definitely better to stay in the south........

Edit/Snip the middle bit;

......maybe you guys just need to see the Pacific Northwest (Seattle-Tacoma-Portland and environs).

Ok Chownah, let's make a deal right here and now- YOU stop encouraging American southerners to the Pacific northwest and I won't encourage farangs to go up to CM, k? :D

On another note, anyone thinking Amuricans (bush pronounciation;) aren't diverse, just get on any Ferry from Vancouver to Victoria on any Canadian summer day and you'll meet the lot- from NY Bronxie's to San Fran hippies and indefinable accents and sub cultures across the board.

America is more than PTA mom's and Walmart Dad's and yes, they DO have the ability to take the piss- just turn off WWF wrestling or Nascar (pulleease people!) and watch Jon Stewart's "Daily Show" for at least one example.

They're out there alright....waaaay out there some of 'em and gotta love it :o

Still, the old red white n blue looks like a sea of scared "red elephants" these days....

Sorry Thaibebop , im not from a different country , I am a American so it is hard for me to say how we are precieved abroad . Unless of course we get to read those snappy replies to your thread right here .

As an off handed poll to some remarks , I will have to say that most American's do not want to be the police of the world , actually most could not care less as long as it does not involve us . As far as the oil in iraq goes , our gas prices have never been higher than they are right now . When I think about it , as some people are sayig that the war in iraq is about oil , im thinking that we should be getting it for a much lower price . Why not , everyone thinks that and I for one would be happy to get a better price. BUT that is not happening .

Most Americans like Thai's are proud of their country . It does not make us better than anyone , it is just the way we are . Hey , even brits are proud of their country

And don't get me wrong....the dominant culture in the US sucks even worse than how northern Thailand sucks and we know how it is definitely better to stay in the south........

:o Great post. And yes, Jon Stewart's show is great! Sometimes Saturday Night Live s good, too, especially when they were taking the piss out of Bush (Will Ferrel) and Al Gore during the 2000 election. After a respectable lapse of time after 9/11, Ferrel and the SNL cast started doing skits on Al Qaeda power struggles inside a cave, which were hilarious.

I watch Jon Stewart. Like him. Always liked him, back from the days he was still a standup comedian. But again he is a minority. How many "mainstream" Americans hate him or his likes ? all those hippies ??? How many Americans love the Hippies and the NYers ??? Let's face it, they are hated across America. Boon Me our resident provincial redneck could go on and on why he hates them :o

Sorrrrrrrrry! I accept your graciously offered deal....about an hour after posting I actually thought about what I had done and felt a bit ashamed about it....so to everyone out there who read my post....I'm really sorry that I attempted to lure you to the cesspool of the Pacific Northwest of the US of A. I was justs trying to get you to go there so my miscreant friends could rip you off and generally ridicule and torment you......tourists are such fun to play with!!!!!....so I'm sorry and its definitely best to stay in Omaha or Tampa or Mobile and, yes, inspite of its recent problems it even better to stay in New Orleans than it is to wander off to the suck laden Pacific Northwest!!!

Yeah, and it rains ALOT, there. No, really, it does. And there are really, really big hills, and a lot of gay/lesbians, and Nirvana wannabes.

What the h3ll is a mainstream American?

How do you define this term?

When was the last time you were in the states and for how long?

Ya know, Rap is very big. It's everywhere. In our clothes, movies, commericals, etc. So, are mainstream Americans Blacks, people who listen to rap, or white kids from the burbs who act Black?

One thing that does amaze me about this thread, is how vitriolic some Americans can be over for other Americans who perhaps don't share the same background, politics or interests.

Or even State or town.

I may be wrong, but I don't see Brits, or Frenchmen or Danes or Aussies or Kiwis - or in fact any other nationality doing this over for their fellow countrymen. Especially fellow ex-pats.

Maybe some light hearted joking about football, cricket or rugby, but nothing on the scale we see here.

Curious.

If that isn't the biggest crock of crap I've ever heard you say, Thomas.

I've worked with Scots, Geordies, Scousers, Taffs etc for a long time and y'all whinge, bicker, croak and whine amongst yourselves every bit as much as Yanks... :o

Aren't they the Federalists from the North who whinged, bickered, croaked, whined, killed and maimed the gentlemanly, slave owning Confederates, less than a hundred and fifty years ago?

Note the boldened print in Mr. Merton´s Post (boldened by me) And I would dare say I agree with both of you. Hold on. Boon, yes, I too have worked with a large variety of regional people in the UK, and also in NL, France, Italy, Belgium, Thailand, even within smaller countries like Scotlans, and even Monaco, Luxemburg.... They all "whinge, bicker, croak and whine amongst yourselves every bit as much as Yanks... :D"...

However, Over in LOS, or in many countries around the world, if anything, all these different people from different regions of the Home Country, if anything, tend to put aside their regional differences and band together more. Lighthearted banter aside, again agreed, as this helps us in "far away lands" to recall a little of how much shit we did give/get from eachother back "home".

edit: All these nationalities put their differences aside in expat locations... ALL, escept americans... Why? Because I feel that - GENERALLY SPEAKING - American expats never consider the place they live "home". In the back of their minds "home" is always their homeland, and they are just here to profit, benefit, or try to "better " the local populace in their confrontational ways. ( the whole point came across in the edit .... :D)

MTV Rap is not Mainstream America, I can tell you that.

You want to see mainstream America ? go to any shopping mall on a Saturday afternoon as long as it's not in a big city

Battle Cry of Freedom

Our flag is proudly floating

On the land and on the main,

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Beneath it oft we've conquered,

And we'll conquer oft again!

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

CHORUS:Our Dixie forever!

She's never at a loss!

Down with the eagle

And up with the cross!

We'll rally 'round the bonny flag,

We'll rally once again,

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Our gallant boys have marched

To the rolling of the drums,

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

And the leaders in charge cry out,

"Come, boys, come!"

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!--CHORUS

They have laid down their lives

On the bloody battle field,

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Their motto is resistance --

"To tyrants we'll not yield!"

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!--CHORUS

While our boys have responded

And to the fields have gone,

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!

Our noble women also

Have aided them at home,

Shout, shout the battle cry of Freedom!--CHORUS

When Johnny comes marching home

When Johnny comes marching home again,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

We'll give him a hearty welcome then,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

The men will cheer, the boys will shout,

The ladies they will all turn out,

And we'll all feel gay

When Johnny comes marching home.

The old church bells will peal with joy,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

To welcome home our darling boy,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

The village lads and lassies say

With roses they will strew the way,

And we'll all feel gay

Whn Johnny comes marching home.

Get ready for the Jubilee,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

We'll give the hero three times three,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

The laurel wreath is ready now

To place upon his loyal brow,

And we'll all feel gay

When Johnny comes marching home.

Let love and friendship on that day,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

Their choicest treasures then display,

Hurrah! Hurrah!

And let each one perform some part

To fill with joy the warrior's heart,

And we'll all feel gay

When Johnny comes marching home.

I have to disagree, or rather add an important point, for what you said has some truth, but I am assuming you have never lived in American here so bear with me.

Americans are not united. That is why we get so excited when we are (9/11) most of the time we fight amoung ourselves and disagree all the time.

From what ever region you are from you will always look down on other people from different areas of America. Everyone looks at the South as a bunch of hillbilles, the Northeast as a mixed bag of uncaring people, Southwest was lost to Mexico ten years ago, West Coast is nothing more than movie stars, health nuts, and gays, Midwest, violent Chirstain fundies who hate everybody.

So, when Americans do not feel a need to be bonded to eachother socially, it means nothing to us. Of course I am speaking of White Americans. If there is any unity in America it is to be found within ethnic communities, not amoung whites. And of course there is no unity between whites and everybody else.

This may change in the future but I think it is apart of American culture. We are rised to disagree and debate. We are told not to trust and question everything. This has adverse effects on unity. So, when we travel and meet other Amercians we treat them just like we would back home.

I have met many Amercians who have spent time in Thailand and view it now as home and want to go back, so I dohn't know how much of homesickness is an issue. Some Americans just want to escape America, right Butterfly?

When Johnny comes marching home.

Sarcasm, then?

Sarcasm - Oh, no.

After all it is such a crude form of wit, don't you think?

No.

Let us just say, I was attempting, in oblique fashion to refer to the irony that the United States of America was engaged in a violent civil war but a few years ago.

A civil war, I suspect, is not over yet.

Certainly recent events as reelected in this forum would suggest there is most certainly a considerable lack of agreement, amongst our friends over the pond, in defining such words as "Federal", "State", "United" and "responsibility".

And that is not mention the interesting arguments that could develop should we begin to reflect on the meanings of "duty", "loyalty"and "a code of honour".

I thought that is where you might be going, but I doubt my own reasoning quite often, it's a form of personnal checks and balance. Keeps my head from getting too big and helps to keep my foot out of my mouth. Two these my country men suffer from. :o
