Italy calls Paris 'hostile' as France steps up efforts to block migrants

2011-04-08 00:01:02 GMT+7 (ICT)

ROME (BNO NEWS) -- Italian Interior Minister Roberto Maroni accused France of being "hostile" on Thursday as the French government said it would keep blocking North African migrants at its border even if Italy issued them with residence permits.

French Interior Minister Claude Gueant said that migrants arriving from Italy could be sent back if they do not have identity documents or proof of "sufficient economic resources," ANSA news agency reported.

"France will not suffer the wave of migrants," Gueant said.

"It is absolutely within France's rights to send them back to Italy and that's what it will do".

Maroni did not comment on the statements by Gueant, who he will meet on Friday. He, however, opened fire on the French authorities earlier on Thursday while briefing parliament on the government's intention to issue the temporary residence permits to allow migrants to travel to other European Union member states.

"Paris has had a hostile attitude," he told the Italian parliament, as cited by ANSA.

"Free circulation in the Schengen area is guaranteed by the regulations and these must be respected". Maroni also reiterated his claim that Europe has not done enough to help Italy.

The Italian government has repeatedly complained about the lack of support from the European Union with its migrant crisis, especially France which has been blocking the entrance of Tunisian migrants at the French-Italian border.

The French government said it has the right to stop undocumented migrants without breaking the Schengen Agreement that abolished border controls in much of mainland Europe. European Home Affairs Commissioner Cecilia Malmstrom reprimanded France for turning back the migrants at its border.

Italy hoped to deal with the crisis by issuing many of the almost 26,000 migrants to arrive this year with temporary permits, with a decree for this set to be approved Thursday. But the French government countered the move with an interior ministry order saying that, in addition to the possession of residence permits, migrants from third countries need a ''valid travel document recognized by France'', proof of having economic resources, and the officials also have to be satisfied "their presence does not represent a threat to public order".

On Tuesday, the Italian government reached an agreement with the Tunisian authorities to stop the flow of migrants and repatriate new arrivals to Italy in exchange for aid and assistance.

The European liberal left who run European union policy are on collision course with French public opinion - which feels threatened by the rate of immigration from North Africa.

The French far right are already the largest party and if when they get in watch open border agreements get scrapped.

A shock poll showed far-right champion Marine Le Pen leading the race for the French presidency on Sunday, as incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy faced claims he is fuelling anti-Muslim sentiment.

An opinion poll conducted by Harris Interactive for Le Parisien newspaper put the National Front leader Le Pen's likely support in next year's vote at 23 percent, against 21 percent for the centre-right's Sarkozy

The French have already kicked out the Gypsies in the past year.

I bet Italy is giving these permits with full expectation that most will pass through to France and England.

The main problem is that France gets the wrong immigrants!

80% of them must be African immigrants, muslim or christian, that bring huge families in and yield almost no economic benefit, burden the welfare state and cause criminality.

South american pregnant women are assaulting French Guyana in droves to give birth on French soil, because then their babies are automatically French.

The situation is disgusting, but unfortunately it is too late to do anything.

Best the French can do is seal the borders for "culturally alien" immigrants and try their best to assimilate those which already hold a French passport.

Already French elections are a two horse race between the right and the far right. I lived in Brussels about 15 years ago and even then there was tension caused by the central E.C policies and the local government who were on a go slow processing residency permits for North African migrants. Flanders in the north of Belgium had a far right party with the largest share of the vote. And so it goes on. Any society has a finite capacity for assimilating new immigrants and furthermore said immigrants have to be prepared to try and assimilate or cultural tensions escalate. If you are a house or shop owner who becomes a virtual prisoner in your abode for the duration of time people block steets by illegaly praying there then your rights are being trampled all over, hence the understandable backlash.

Henderson's clash of civilisations is still frighteningly relevent in 2011.

It isn't Pat Robertson's opinion, but a report on an event in Paris. Are the images taken from the Frenchman inaccurate or false? If they are not false, then they are an accurate portrayal of the events, correct? What would be the reaction in Lahore if Christians decided to do the same thing? How about in Riyadh? In your beloved Tehran?

I think we should not ignore what is the source here. Under other circumstances you would not hesitate to do the same, right?

The article is a report on an event in Paris and not about Lahore, Tehran or the American friends in Riyadh.

from the article:

"But even if many government elites are in France are in denial over Islam, the people in the streets increasingly are not. Some have become fed up with what they see as the growing Islamization of France.

They've started staging pork and wine "aperitifs," or cocktail parties in the street. They're patriotic demonstrations meant to strike back against Islam."

"pork parties"? how original. :whistling:

Try that in front of a synagogue than you might realise what you are and how we should call these patriotic party goers.

Jews don't block the streets praying, for the most part they try to integrate, besides which their numbers are tiny compared to Muslims. Wearing the Burqa was seen by the French as divisive, hence the forthcoming ban. Praying in the steet is provocative, if a building was hired on a temporary basis for such purpose who could complain?

Facebook pork party banned after racism allegations

AFP - Paris police on Tuesday banned a controversial "pork sausage and wine" street party planned by extremist groups to combat what they saw as the "Islamisation" of a city neighbourhood.

The event was planned for Friday evening at a time when the district's streets are usually jammed with Muslims coming out of mosques and just before Algeria were due to play England in the football World Cup.

But police banned the event and any rival gatherings in the Goutte d'Or area of northern Paris' 18th arrondissement, or district, saying in a statement that it was likely to cause "serious risks to public order."

The plan had sparked outrage from politicians and anti-racism groups who said it was blatantly racist and could lead to violence on the streets.

...

http://www.france24.com/en/20100615-facebook-pork-party-banned-after-racism-allegations-paris-islam

Marine Le Pen, deputy leader of the right-wing National Front (FN) party, calls the ban a “capitulation” by authorities to Muslims.

The conservative American Thinker website ran a blog notice titled “Creeping Sharia,” suggesting that concern by Paris city hall of a riot or casualties is a bending to Islamic law.

That is hardly the main reading in France.

A more authentic comparison might be a neo-Nazi group holding a pork barbecue in front of a synagogue in a Hasidic Brooklyn neighborhood on Passover, then, when the city bans the event, calling the response “Creeping Torah.”

French Protestant clergy are opposing the anti-Muslim party, including Friday’s “festival” at Arc de Triomphe – calling it “explicitly racial and religiously motivated.” Pastors have written letters comparing derogatory images of Muslims in the Facebook invitation to ugly images of Jews broadcast during the Vichy regime under the Nazis.

Pastor James Woody of the Paris church Oratoire du Louvre said of the event that, “a rally specifically aimed at fellow citizens of France who are Muslim, using the French flag – that is not the way to do something in brotherhood.”

I think you will find that if the event was held with a permit in a public area of Paris most synagogue members might be upset but would undertsand the concept of freedom of expression. BTW, a great many jews eat pork. Reform and Conservative jews do not necessarily even keep kosher. Google Kibbutz Lahav and learn that there is a kibbutz where pigs are raised. :)

The issue here is one of muslims taking over vast city streets blocking the free movement of others. I do not believe you can cite one example where other religious faiths in France do the same. That's the issue.

If you have ever seen the suburbs around Paris and other french cities you would understand their feelings.

It's not that individual french dislike africans or muslims per se, it's more they fear a massive tide wiping away their culture, forcing another one they can't understand on it. The LePen FN is a symptom, but not the only one. They always do well early on and Jean Marie LePen Marine's father actually beat Jospin the socialist a few years back, but in the main election Chirac whooped his ass by a true 80% to 20%. So lets not assume this early poll is that prophetic. Sarkozy was elected on a law and oder platform, in consideration of many riots and disorder happening in the Banlieus AKA suburbs. I have personally been the victim of 2 street riots in France and understand both sides since I am also an outsider for there, and an observer of both sides.

"...Any society has a finite capacity for assimilating new immigrants and furthermore said immigrants have to be prepared to try and assimilate or cultural tensions escalate..."

This line sums up the problem for France.

One has to ask, what is it about Italy that is making them move north to France in such numbers?

Posted (edited)

Oh, and it is not 'Muslims taking over vast city streets to pray'

They do it at set hours, on certain agreed upon side streets, that have transit routes around them arranged in advance.

I lived there for years and the prayer times were not a problem for moving around Paris. The periodic street rage causing riots was, but not on a daily basis.

( law and order platform: typo above. not freudian slip)

getting back to the issue of the thread, one senses that Italy is trying to export its illegal refugee problem. It is a way of Italy pressuring other EU nations to help it out. Also, Italy is angry over the Libyan conflict. It know that a refugee problem would ensue if Gaddaffi chose to retaliate by encouraging North Africans to transit Libya. The French have every right to secure their borders, particularly since France has a more generous welfare system for refugees than does Italy.

No human is illegal.

Maybe they prefer France over Italy just because of the stories the grandparents told them about both. :whistling:

Tourists and NON-0 rant about immigrants and foreigners, why did you move even abroad? If you are such a good patriot and are afraid that your 'civilisation' is overrun by the others your duty is at home.

No human is illegal? OK, I never said they were. Entering another nation without permission is an illegal act.

Now, if you are a supporter of no borders and complete unfettered movement across borders than I believe you to be a hypocrite. It is easy for you to spout such a philosophy since you are not the one paying the costs of illegal movements. Nor would you tolerate the arrival of thousands of Han Chinese or Burmese or Rohingyas in your backyard crapping and peeing all over the place, killing and eating your dog, requiring services that you cannot provide and presenting a serious infectious health hazard.

The groups that you reference, Tourists and Non-Os usually comply with the law. Should they not, they are subject sanction including deportation.

In respect to your comment that my duty is at home, I continue to pay my income taxes to my home country. This is a conscious decision on my part. I also pay taxes in Thailand, although I am entitled to a credit under my home country tax laws.

My presence in Thailamd is of benefit to the nation of Thailand as Thailand derives benefits from my presence. Now, I don't know about you, but I am an educated professional with a career that has a positive impact upon the lives of others. I am compensated in part upon my results. If you are basically an unproductive guest of Thailand, that's unfortunate and I can see why Thais can sometimes modify their immigration laws the presence of such people.

Well today is an important day - Ban the Burqa day infact, as a nationwide ban comes into force today in France. Al-Qaeda have predictably sworn revenge, but let it be remembered some moderate Arab nations such as Turkey and Tunisia have similar bans in force but are no doubt exempt from being an Al-Qaeda target. <_<

The junior minister for urban affairs, Fadela Amara, told reporters that that while she 'enjoys a party,' she found this one 'scandalous.' 'I firmly condemn this type of initiative that is not joyful, but hateful, racist and xenophobic,' she told reporters in the town of Mantes-La-Jolie outside Paris.

The same people were also behind the controversial pork soup for homeless project.

French nationalists distribute pork soup

Extreme right wing groups are distributing pork soup to the needy in Nice and Strasbourg, raising the ire of charity associations who claim the project discriminates against Muslims and Jews in need.

Every Wednesday for the past six weeks the southern regionalist group Soulidarieta (solidarity) has been distributing the foodstuff at locations close to soup kitchens.

Soulidarieta is ideologically linked to the extreme right movement Identity Bloc. While serving soup the militants are also giving-out leaflets with the words: “Ours before the others!”.

... Jewish organisations have expressed their concern. “It’s a disgrace to discriminate between impoverished people,” said Pierre Levy, CRIF’s delegate in Strasbourg. “I read about this phenomenon in Nice but I never imagined it would reach our city.”

“There are poor and homeless Jews in Strasbourg. It’s really revolting and unbearable to see extremists use this for their propaganda.”
