One killed after Egyptian army cracks down on Tahrir Square protest

CAIRO (BNO NEWS) -- At least one person was killed and several others were injured on Saturday after the Egyptian army crack downed on protests in Cairo's Tahrir Square, Ahram Online reported.

The violence occurred after the military tried to disperse a mass sit-in calling for ousted President Hosni Mubarak to be tried for corruption. A report issued by Egypt's Ministry of Health said that 71 people reported injuries, including wounds resulting from gunshots. Witnesses say live ammunition was used, in addition to tasers, batons and tear gas grenades. The army, however, denied using live rounds.

Protesters regathered in the square, where an army bus and truck were burning, after the military withdrew from the area.

The Supreme Council of the Armed Forces released a statement claiming the attack was targeted against thugs and members of the former-ruling National Democratic Party who they accused of 'conducting sabotage' in the square. It added that protesters were considered "outlaws" since they were out past curfew.

The military's attempt to disperse demonstrators came after several alleged army officers joined the Tahrir sit-in. Several sources claim the officers are retirees living abroad who are seeking vengeance on Egypt's military institutions.

On Friday, Egyptians gathered at the square to demand the dismantling of the old regime. Protesters have vowed to continue rallying until the full demands of the revolution are met.

The military council took control of Egypt after Mubarak, who led Egypt as president for three decades, stepped down after weeks of anti-government protests by crowds calling for greater democracy and respect of human rights.
