I am glad to see poetry lovers here! Glad you joined in K'turtle rocks & K"itsatree. I, too, love simpler poems and such. I do have Khun Seni's book somewhere - haven't seen it in a long time though. Glad to see someone have it online (http://www.suphawut.com/translations/masterpieces/seni/index.htm). One of my favorite poets is Uchanee - will share some of her poems here when I have more time....

These are really pretty - especially the second poem - very stylized with the use of the same basic sounds all the way through each line.

There is a modern poet who has been praised (won a SEA Write award) as sounding like Sunthorn Phu. I bought his first anthology - will share some favorites here soon......

I was always warned off Seni Pramoj by Manas Chittakasem who always maintained it was a pointless exercise as even though they were interpretive translations of Thai Poetry, they still made little or no sense to the none native speaker.

There has not yet been a comprehensive attempt to unravel Thai poetry (which is pretty much unrecognisable as poetry once translated) for the non native speaker bar the occasional academic thesis or article.

I was taught to translate first to obtain the meaning of the words; to find the poet's intended sentiment; and then re read the poem, taking in the structure and use of words with the meaning in mind. It takes a he11 of a lot of time but it does work.

I agree with you 100% about the translation. Khun Seni tried to create little poems in English while translating which makes it even harder to understand. The translation doesn't alsways get to the gist of the poems, but I guess you can't blame him for trying.

I think that most poems are to be enjoyed in the essence of their original language - some can be beautifully translated, but probably still don't get to the depth and finesse of the originals....

This poem bemoans the fact that the Chao Praya river which had been the source of life for generation is now pollutted.

This poem paints a picture of someone absorbing the sound from a radio left on by a guard at a factory gate, who's dreaming away.

I can't get the spacing to work porperly, so the stylized structure as appeared in the book is unfortunately lost here....
