In a bid to reassure the public, Thailand's Corrections Department has committed to safeguarding the religious rights of Muslim inmates, following the dramatic arrest of Malaysian pop star Eda Ezrin in a significant drug raid earlier this month. Eda, aged 29, and five other Malaysians were apprehended in Narathiwat with 6,000 methamphetamine pills, causing a media frenzy due to their positive drug tests. The Department of Corrections, through a public statement, emphasised that all foreign prisoners, including those practising Islam, retain the right to observe their faith as long as it aligns with prison guidelines. This declaration arrives amidst public concern over the treatment of Muslim inmates within the Thai prison system. The statement highlighted that all facilities are equipped to serve Halal meals using dedicated utensils, ensuring inmates can adhere to their dietary customs. Additionally, provisions for prayer and religious study are made available, with clean prayer clothes and water provided, especially during Ramadan. Muslim inmates have access to volunteer instructors to deepen their Islamic knowledge. Furthermore, prisoners can communicate with family through video calls and messaging apps under consular assistance during designated hours. Justice Minister Tawee Sodsong, during a visit to Narathiwat Provincial Prison, reiterated Thailand's commitment to upholding dignity and religious freedom for inmates, despite the ongoing high-profile case involving Eda Ezrin.
