Any AIS contract experts out there?

Probably a stupid question, but I have an AIS contract phone and was wondering if they would issue me with a second sim with the same number?

The reason is so that I can use one sim for my computer edge connection and the second one in my mobile. That way I cam make and receive calls while using my GPRS Edge connection.

Or alternatively, would they issue me with a second number, at no additional monthly fee but 'tied' to the first number with the same contract terms, re unlimited GPRS etc.?

Thanks for any advice before I go in and speak to them. (Forewarned is forearmed)

In a word NO.

All you need to do is buy a pay as you go AIS Sim card for 49 baht from any 7/11 and sign up for their unlimited EDGE / GPRS package. It was 1000 baht a month or they did a 250 hours for 520 baht and use your other SIM for your calls :D

If you're on a postpay (subscription) you can get a replacement sim, but I think you need to go to their regional head office in Si Racha to get it. I don't know if they will disable the old sim though, or they will allow you to use both concurrently.

But in the specific situation you describe I'd probably do as H2oDunc suggests and just get two different sims.

Thanks, but I've been doing that for years. It doesn't solve my problem.

Firstly I already have unlimited GPRS on my AIS contract number as I use it in my phone to access email and internet when out and about. I don't want to pay twice.

But the main point is that I only use the edge connection on my PC when my internet main service is down or when I am travelling away from home. So this is just a couple of hours or so every now and then. Up to now, I have been using a pay as you go sim for internet and whatever money I put into it is mainly lost as it expires before I can use it up, then next time I need it I have to top it up again, and then it gets wasted again....and so on...

Phil, I think you're a bit out of date.

I've obtained replacement sims several times at any AIS outlet, (TukCom and Carrefour), at no charge and in a couple of minutes. They will even change the number if you want them to, again at no charge. What I didn't know was whether they would give me two sims - apparently they will, so problem is hopefully solved...

As per Lomatopo yes, but I am on the same contract as you and simply tether my phone by bluetooth to my laptop when I want to use it for internet. I can still make and receive calls without the internet connection dropping out.

Sounds interesting, might try it. Will the connection be as strong as using a USB sim 'dongle'?

BTW whatever method is used, the 2G sim connection is pretty shitty most of the time, only good for checking emails and minimal browsing.

When is 3G going to be rolled out - that should make a big difference - or will it?

Well it is a couple of years since I needed a sim replaced and at the time I used AIS and was required to go to Si Racha. That was actually the reason I cancelled my AIS subscription and got one from DTAC instead as they already had an office in Pattaya that could do these things.

It wasn't clear to me that you wanted to use GPRS on both phones - your OP kinda suggested you needed GPRS on one device and voice on the other ;)

Where is the AIS office in Carrefour? Only ever saw a DTAC office there. AIS seems to have better deals these days, particularly with regards to Internet use - and GPRS with DTAC is atrocious, slow! Might consider changing. What's the status of number portability, can I switch to AIS and take my number with me?

Should be as good as a dongle, but as you say that is not so good anyway. It does drain your phone battery when you tether by bluetooth though.

Just spent a few weeks in Indonesia - they have 3G everywhere, even on the remote desert island I was working on, and it was noticably better but still sluggish compared to a normal connection.

As for 3G in Thailand, I think when the rest of the world is on 5G we might get 3G (or maybe 2.5).

I have 2 AIS sims with the same number, you can only use on at a time for phone usage, internet is no problem though.

Cost for the extra sim was 50baht at Telewiz in Tukom with ongoing monthly fee of 30baht, Iam on pre pay though.

AIS have sales outlets under the name of TELEWIZ. The one in Carrefour is on the first floor, right opposite to DTAC. There is also one in TukcOm, 1st Floor and in Lotus and i think Big C. They all have staff who can issue sims and deal with AIS queries etc.

I am pretty sure you can now keep your number if you switch to AIS, although I doubt that AIS GPRS is any better than Dtac, but you never know.
